Lupanar
The stage glows under lights that mimic the Parisian sky. A flurry of shadows, like drunken ghosts, splatters the audience with cheap beer. The courtesan steps onto the stage and slips off her bra. With a gaze that could conquer an empire, she climbs onto the pole. Then, fake dollars begin to rain from the ceiling, bills fluttering down like petals from a withered flower.
Minutes earlier, in the dressing room, a hand had dropped thirteen drops of poison into her glass. The same hand that, in moments, will forever steal away the most beautiful hips and the most dazzling smile in the brothel.
Unaware, the courtesan sways to the rhythm of a mournful jazz tune. Cigarette smoke curls around her legs, as if Death itself were caressing her skin, savoring her taste. In the shadows, a pair of eyes watches her dance, gleaming with a light that is anything but human. They cannot bear others looking at her, touching her, desiring her. She is theirs. Only theirs. And if they cannot possess her in life, they will have her in death.
The first spasm strikes her mid-spin. A pain splits her gut. The music keeps playing, but her ears only catch a distant murmur, like the echo of the sea inside a shell. She clutches her stomach, confused, as a tragic smile escapes her crimson lips.
"Miss?" says a customer with a hat and whiskey-tainted breath. "Are you alright?"
She tries to answer, but no words come—only a trickle of blood. The stage spins a full turn. The lights blur into smudges of dirty watercolor. And then, she falls.
The silence is a hammer blow. And her body is as perfect as a moon planted by God.
Some scream. Others laugh, thinking it’s part of the show. Until the pool of blood spreads. The brothel descends into hell: women shriek, customers shove to escape... and those eyes that watched her dance remain in the shadows, observing it all with nightmarish calm. Those eyes have possessed her one last time. Now, no one else will touch her.
The police arrive quickly, but not quickly enough. Among her belongings, they find a blue silk dress and an unsigned letter:
"If you’re reading this, it’s because you’ve finally caught me. I don’t know your name, but I’ve felt your breath on my neck every night. I know you hate me because you can’t have me. Enjoy your victory, monster. Because even if you take me, you’ll never have what you truly wanted: my fear left me long ago. All that remains is my corpse... and not even that will be yours."
The days that follow are filled with whispers and theories.
Nine nights later, the new courtesan takes the stage. In the dressing room, an unseen hand drops thirteen drops of something clear into her glass.
The lights on stage still mimic Parisian nights.
