After reading the initiative proposed by my friend @emiliorios, I found myself wondering whether I actually have clearly defined ‘non-negotiable’ issues or situations, because although I recognise that there are many things I cannot tolerate, at that moment I was unable to set them out in a list that would serve as a guide to defining exactly which ones and how many I have.
And by doing the exercise to recognise the extent to which I’m capable of putting a stop to situations I don’t like, I realised that, in a way, I’d gone from being very selective to very permissive in my life – which was a stark wake-up call about how to focus my efforts on regaining a balance that I’ve realised I lost some time ago.
I think the top item on my list is honesty, as there’s one thing I won’t compromise on under any circumstances: allowing myself to be dishonest under any pretext. And this ranges from keeping something by mistake (or letting my children do so) to being asked to do something that goes against this principle. I believe that even if the other person were to be dishonest with me, I would not do the same to them or to anyone else, whether out of revenge or convenience.
Another non-negotiable point concerns the truth. For me, telling it like it is is non-negotiable, and perhaps in this respect I come across as a bit naive to some, as so-called ‘white lies’ stem from the same source as a lie told with malicious intent. At one point, someone suggested to me that this unfiltered behaviour seemed to be an autistic trait on my part, and even if that is the case, I don’t see how there can be any justification for not telling the truth. However, I’ve noticed that, faced with so much criticism for this way of responding, my current reaction is often to shut myself off and refrain from giving my opinion – which may also be a lie by omission – but I refuse to bear false witness to benefit others.
One non-negotiable principle that I feel I no longer adhere to strictly is order; my former level of discipline in ensuring everything was in its place, and in achieving harmony in my living spaces and at work, has gradually faded, mainly due to severe physical and mental exhaustion. Perhaps this decision has come about partly as a result of age, or of the bouts of depression I’ve experienced over the past year, as sometimes simply managing to get back to how I was before is a huge achievement. It doesn’t mean I’m messy now, but I’ve eased off on the rigour of tidying everything up as soon as the opportunity arises.
Betrayal is something I simply cannot forgive. As soon as I realise someone has done it, I cut the relationship off completely, without a word or any explanations intended to make me change my mind. In my eyes, a person who betrays is a monster, as it says a great deal about how they are capable of using others without feeling any remorse. In fact, this sudden, violent reaction I have when faced with betrayal is something many people see as a major flaw in me, but I see it from the other side of the fence, because anyone who associates with people of this sort will, at some point, also fall victim to them.
There may well be many more non-negotiables, but these are the ones that govern my day-to-day life, and I believe they form the basis of who I am and what I show to others. And for those who are unable to accept them, a sign pops up saying, ‘Stop! This is my list of non-negotiables.’
