From my childhood I have wonderful memories, almost all very present, perhaps because I have not stopped being a child, despite already finishing my 40s.

Having only one older brother, and living in an apartment, our games and experiences focused on those four walls, as our parents were not into outings or taking us to play outside.

One of my memories was playing as if we were a family with many children, who were all my dolls. My brother either played the father, or my chauffeur, as he drove our big car which was the couch in our house, and I would arrange all my daughters side by side, placing the stroller on the backrest.

My brother liked to play that way, but I got bored very quickly, so I suggested we take out his hot wheels cars to play on the floor. For him, playing with cars meant making a long line along the edge of the wall, creating a kind of completely immobile and boring parking lot, so I would come in with one of them out of control, crashing into all of them, creating imaginary explosions, and for him, that was terrible!

I ended up being scolded by mom, and condemned to play alone until his tantrum passed.

Another memory with my brother was once when we were trapped in the elevator. We lived on the 9th floor, so it was normal to take the elevator, even when we were alone. But on those days it was malfunctioning and although it reached the floor, the door wouldn't open! And when that happened, my brother immediately started crying desperately, while I started shouting for help through the gap between the two door panels.

Luckily it didn't take long for someone to hear me, and among the neighbors they managed to open the door and get us out of there, I was very calm, but my brother was a bundle of nerves.

But I consider that recounting this without mentioning my close cousins would be sacrilege, as they were like siblings whom I only saw during vacation time. My childhood without them would not have been so much fun, especially because being the only girl, I had to adapt to their games and customs.

With them I learned to climb trees, play marbles and baseball, run to avoid getting caught, and differentiate when and where I should behave like a "girl" in the eyes of others.

When we played couples, I always chose my older cousin, because between the two, he was the cutest, and my brother didn't count as a candidate, dear Lord!! hahaha. And remembering this, but seeing how that cousin looks nowadays, I laugh thinking thank goodness it was just a game, because he looks terrible! haha

As we got a little older, my brother, my cousins, and I started to drift apart due to the stark differences in our personalities. My brother thinks I'm crazy and eccentric, and slow people without a sense of humor annoy me, and since he sees life through a very narrow funnel, it was best to keep our distance.

As for my cousins, their extreme political beliefs, contrary to my preferences, lack of respect for differences, and attempts to take advantage of my accomplishments, also led to a definitive separation.

But the beautiful thing is that the memories of childhood endure, and as I always prefer to focus on the good, that time remains one of my greatest treasures.

This is my participation in Memory Monday #19, proposed by ericvancewalton@ericvancewalton.
