Unlike in my home country, where we can wear the same clothes all year round, here in the south, we have to switch up our outfits halfway through the season. Even though you could keep wearing some items, the weather forces you to give up on others—unless you want to freeze to death trying.
And since we’re in the middle of fall, it’s time to put away the lighter pieces like dresses, shorts, and short-sleeved shirts, and bring out sweaters, jackets, and long pants to help us cope with the cold that’s coming our way for the next few months.
At first, I admit I was really lazy about doing this, but now I actually enjoy it, since it means the unbearable heat is finally over. Plus, it lets me see how much my youngest son has grown, since a lot of the things we’re putting away no longer fit him—and luckily, the hand-me-downs from his older brother help out a bit.
I like to do this ahead of time, because even though everything is stored very cleanly, Buenos Aires is a very humid city, and sometimes clothes and other items end up with a “musty” smell, as my grandmother used to say. So on more than one occasion, I’ve had to rinse some items again before being able to use them, which is why I take advantage of the nice fall weather to do this work.
In a way, it’s like doing an unboxing, even though the items aren’t new, but I can’t help but be surprised by some pieces I didn’t remember. In this case, though, there was an even bigger surprise: I realized that I’m the one who doesn’t have any winter clothes. At the end of last winter, I decided to give away all my fleece-lined pants and sweatpants to force myself to buy new ones, so now I have to set aside some money to buy at least a couple of items.
For now, we’re organizing the room a bit, sorting through the clothes, washing what I need to keep and what I need to get rid of, and also discarding the things that no longer fit my kids to take them to the charity closet. Meanwhile, I’m also preparing some scented sachets, which I keep in each of the houses, to try to prevent those stored items from picking up unpleasant odors during the season, but I’ll tell you more about that another time.
