Invito a participar a @soyunasantacruz,
@yagelybr y a
In particular, I believe that initiatives are a starting point for sparking creativity, and that what needs to change is the way we approach them, so we don’t fall into the trap of always using the same formula.
In my case, addressing uncomfortable topics is an excellent way to challenge those who decide to get involved in an initiative that goes beyond clichés.
The thing is, we often get so used to something that it ends up becoming part of our “personal brand”—the thing by which our acquaintances identify us. The same shade of hair dye or haircut, the same clothes, or even the nail polish we wear every day.
For me, an initiative that makes you delve into your memories or put yourself in hypothetical situations brings out something magical in each of us. Speaking of changes, they can be simple if we’re just talking about physical appearance, but there are also changes that can be radical in the way we think and act—shaking up those predictable daily routines so that any change is immediately noticeable.
That’s why, accepting the challenge from the @hiveargentina community, I’m taking the initiative to launch a collaborative project so that, in the spirit of a confession, we can share what your most radical change has been—whether physical, emotional, spiritual, or in some aspect of your daily life.
In fact, sometimes we go through changes that we only realize over time; other, more radical changes open our eyes so we can move forward; and some serve as lessons learned from what others have gone through.
And this initiative goes beyond obvious changes—such as motherhood or migration—because, although these are also profound, they are experiences many people go through at some point. In this case, we’re talking about changes you never would have imagined happening to you.
One example is the young man who was driving the hearse the day we took my father to the crematorium. I was sitting next to him, overcome with sadness, and he started making small talk. When I turned to answer one of his questions, I noticed he had no fingers on his right hand, and he calmly met my look of astonishment.
From there, he began to tell a story that not only moved me but also ended up being a life lesson. The events took place when he was about 20 years old—perhaps younger—because his older brother had taken him to work on a farm after he’d given up on finishing high school. There, he operated a machine that separated the seeds from the fruit, and in a moment of inattention, his hand got caught between the machine’s rollers.
His brother, who also worked there, alerted the supervisor while trying to help him remove his protective glove amid the screams. To his surprise, the machine had severed four of his fingers at the first phalanx. Upon seeing them, he ran off toward the fields, only to collapse unconscious a short time later.
From that point on, his memories fade, and all he can recall is the depression that consumed him for many years. He wanted to die and tried to do so, until, after a lot of therapy, he realized that life hadn’t ended with the loss of his fingers. He learned to drive and was now working at the funeral home where we held my father’s wake.
At that time, despite my grief over my loss, I realized that I had to keep moving forward even when everything seemed to be against me. That was her radical change, and for me, the starting point for stopping my explosive reactions to situations I can’t control.
I invite @soyunasantacruz,
@yagelybr, and
@suezoe to participate—perhaps they have stories to share about their own radical changes throughout their lives.
