For this week, the analysis I am conducting regarding the Brothers Grimm focuses on a particular story that—true to form—promotes humanity's most beautiful values.
Para esta semana el análisis que voy a hacer sobre los hermanos Grimm es sobre una historia particularmente que tal como nos tienen acostumbrados, fomenta los valores más hermosos de la humanidad.
Overview/Resumen
A king of a faraway kingdom had three sons; two were big and strong but boastful and arrogant. At some point, they decided to strike out on their own, leaving the palace in search of fortune, success, and adventure, though they failed to find them. Eventually, their younger brother joined them, but the two older brothers—who constantly called him "The Fool"—mocked him, arguing that if they had been unable to make their way in the world, he certainly wouldn't succeed either. Nevertheless, they allowed him to accompany them. Along the way, they came across an ant colony, and the older brothers proposed destroying the anthill just for fun; the younger brother objected and forbade it. Shortly after, they found a group of wild ducks swimming in a pond, and the older brothers suggested killing them to roast and eat them, but once again, the younger brother opposed the idea.
Un rey de un reino muy lejano tenía tres hijos, dos de ellos eran grandes, fuertes pero fanfarrones y soberbios, en algún punto de sus vidas ambos decidieron ir por su cuenta y abandonar el palacio en busca de su propia fortuna, el éxito y aventuras pero no lo consiguieron, al cabo de un tiempo su hermano menor se unió a ellos, pero los dos hermanos mayores que constantemente lo llamaban "El Bobo" se burlaron de él aduciendo que si ellos no habían conseguido abrirse paso en el mundo él mucho menos podía lograrlo, sin embargo le permitieron acompañarlos y durante el camino encontraron una colonia de hormigas y entonces los hermanos mayores propusieron destruir el hormiguero solo por diversión, el hermano menor se opuso y se los prohibió, al poco rato encontraron un grupo de patos salvajes nadando en un lado, entonces los hermanos mayores propusieron matarlos para asesarlos, y en esta ocasión el hermano menor volvió a oponerse.
As they continued their journey, they entered a forest where they found a huge beehive overflowing with honey—so much, in fact, that it was dripping down the tree trunk. The older brothers proposed lighting a fire to smoke out the bees and claim the honey, but, just as on previous occasions, the youngest brother objected. They pressed on until they reached an abandoned castle inhabited by a dwarf, who led them to a separate room. The next day, he summoned the eldest brother and explained that the kingdom was under an evil spell; to break it, he had to complete three tasks. If he succeeded before sunset, he would not only lift the curse but also marry the king's daughter; if he failed, however, he would be turned to stone. The first task was to find the princess's thousand lost pearls.
Mientras continuaban el viaje entraron a un bosque en el cual encontraron un enorme panal de abejas repleto de miel, era tanta que esta escurría por el tranco del árbol, los hermanos mayores propusieron encender fuego para sofocar las abejas y apropiarse de la miel, pero tal como en las ocasiones anteriores, el hermano menor se opuso. De esta manera continuaron avanzando hasta llegar a un castillo abandonado en el que vivía un enano que los condujo a una habitación diferente, al día siguiente llamó al hermano mayor y le explicó que el reino yacía bajo un hechizo malvado, y para desencantarlo debía cumplir tres tareas, si lo conseguía antes del ocaso lograría no solo romper el conjuro sino que además se casaría con la hija del rey, pero si no lo conseguía entonces quedaría convertido en piedra. La primer tarea consistía en encontrar las mil cuentas perdidas de la princesa.
Unfortunately, he was unable to complete the task and was turned to stone; the same fate befell the second brother. However, the youngest brother fared differently: although he grew frustrated as the deadline approached, the ants he had previously rescued appeared and gathered all the beads for him. The next day, the task involved retrieving an object from the bottom of the lake, and this time, the ducks he had saved from death came to his aid. The final task seemed simpler: the dwarf led him to a room with three beds where three beautiful princesses lay asleep. He had to identify which of them was the youngest and most beautiful. The problem was that the three were identical, and the only clue was that, before sleeping, the eldest had eaten a lump of sugar, the middle one a spoonful of syrup, and the youngest a spoonful of honey. Just then, the queen of the bees—from the hive the youngest prince had protected—arrived; she landed on the lips of each princess and identified the youngest as the one who had eaten the honey. Thus, the spell was broken; the youngest brother married the youngest princess, and his two brothers married the other two princesses.
Lamentablemente él no pudo completar la tarea, así que terminó convertido en piedra, sucedió lo mismo con el segundo hermano pero no con el hermano más joven, pues, aunque él se frustró cuando se acercaba el vencimiento del plazo, en ese momento aparecieron las hormigas que él había rescatado, y ellas reunieron todas las cuentas para él, al día siguiente, la próxima tarea consistía en buscar algo en el fondo del lago, y en esta ocasión fueron los patos que él había rescatado de la muerte a los que fueron en su ayuda. Y la última tarea parecía más sencilla, el enano l condujo hacia una habitación con tres camas donde dormían tres hermosas princesas, él debía descubrir cuál de ellas era la más joven y hermosa, el problema era que las tres eran idénticas y la única información que tenían era que antes de dormir la mayor se había comido un terrón de azúcar, la menor una cucharada de jarabe y la más joven una cucharada de miel, entonces en ese momento llegó la reina de las abejas que vivían en el panal que el príncipe más joven había resguardado, y después de posarse sobre los labios de las tres princesas, encontró a la más joven que era la que se había comido la cucharada de miel, de esta manera se rompió el conjuro, el hermano se casó con la princesa más joven y sus dos hermanos se casaron con las otras dos princesas.
My Opinion/Mi Opinión
To me, nobility is one of the most valuable things in the world, and that is precisely what characterizes the main character of this story; yet the younger brother is not merely noble—he is loyal, possesses high ethical and moral values, and is empathetic. The older brothers, on the other hand, symbolize human arrogance—specifically that of youth, which often believes itself self-sufficient and capable of achieving anything without help. Furthermore, the older brothers in this tale take pleasure in hurting others simply because they want to and because they can.
Para mí una de las cosas que más tiene valor en este mundo es la nobleza, y eso es precisamente lo que caracteriza al personaje principal de esta historia, pero el hermano menor no solo es noble, es leal, con altos valores éticos y morales, además de ser empático, los hermanos mayores por su parte simbolizan la soberbia humana y en especial de la juventud que siempre se cree autosuficiente y capaz de lograr todo sin ayuda. Los hermanos mayores de este cuento además disfrutan lastimando a otros seres solo porque quieren y pueden.
And this brings me to the next point: throughout the story, the Brothers Grimm demonstrate two crucial things. The first is that you should never underestimate anyone, no matter how small or insignificant you might consider them to be—you never know when you might need their valuable help. The other lesson is that we are not self-sufficient; we always need support, because a joint undertaking can progress much faster and more effectively than one carried out alone. This requires maturity and humility—qualities the older princes clearly lacked.
Y esto me lleva al siguiente punto, los hermanos Grimm nos demuestran a lo largo de todo el relato dos cosas importantísimas, la primera es que no debes subestimar a nadie por pequeño o insignificante que puedas llegar a considerarlo, nunca sabrás cuando podrías necesitar de su valiosa ayuda, y la otra lección es que precisamente no somos autosuficientes, siempre necesitaremos de apoyo, porque una empresa que se lleva a cabo en conjunto puede avanzar mucho más rápido y de manera efectiva que una que se hace por cuenta propia, y para esto hay que tener madurez y humildad, algo que claramente los príncipes mayores no tenían.
Another important point the Brothers Grimm sought to highlight was the value of friendship, loyalty, and gratitude. I know that when someone does something for you selflessly, they expect nothing in return; yet, how wonderful it is to reciprocate the gesture when they least expect it and need it most. That is precisely what the ants, ducks, and bees in this story did: they showed the prince that he was not alone and that they would support him, just as he had supported them when they were in danger. Thus, we can conclude that treating the vulnerable with respect creates a network of mutual support that will, sooner or later, save us.
Y el otro punto importante que los Grimm pretendieron resaltar fue el valor de la amistad, la lealtad y el agradecimiento. Sé que cuando alguien hace algo por ti de manera desinteresada precisamente una espera nada a cambio, pero que bonito es retribuir el gesto cuando menos lo espera y cuando más te necesita, eso fue lo que hicieron las hormigas, los patos y las abejas de esta historia, le demostraron al príncipe que no estaba solo y que lo apoyarían así como él lo hizo cuando todos ellos estuvieron en peligro. Así que con esto podríamos concluir que tratar con respeto a los más débiles genera una red de apoyo mutuo que tarde o temprano nos salvará.
