The
@hiveargentina monthly initiative brings us a crucial topic this month—one we often overlook. I don't know how each of you personally manages your health on this platform, but I’m going to share my own experience. You see, if someone were to ask me what I like most about my physical self, I would unhesitatingly say my health; despite the occasional, sporadic setback, I rarely get sick. On the few occasions when I have been seriously ill, my body has held up remarkably well and responded to treatment just as expected. However, I must honestly admit that I am not the type of person who enjoys going for regular, routine medical check-ups; I only go if I feel something is wrong. That said, I’m not irresponsible either—I am fully up to date on my vaccinations and strictly follow doctors' orders whenever I’ve needed medical care.
As I’ve mentioned, I’ve rarely been sick—just the occasional cold—but there was one time when I was critically ill and even on the verge of death (I’ve shared this story before here on Hive, but I’d like to tell you about it). It happened when I was about 27: I felt a slight abdominal pain—very mild, really just a nagging discomfort. However, it intensified, and by the next day, the pain was quite severe. I didn't hesitate to go to the doctor with my parents, but everywhere we went, I was either told there was nothing wrong with me, or the doctors were simply too busy with other patients and didn't consider my case an emergency because I wasn't crying or screaming. I spent four days going from one clinic to another, trying to endure the pain or keep it under control with painkillers, until I finally arrived at a private practice. I was pale, had dark circles under my eyes, was in agonizing pain, and had a fever of 40°C. The diagnosis was appendicitis, so my parents took me to a private clinic where I underwent surgery; there, I was also diagnosed with acute peritonitis (inflammation of the membrane lining several vital organs). As a result, my appendix was removed, but I also lost my right ovary and right fallopian tube that day. I spent eight days hospitalized with a paralyzed intestine, unable to eat or drink anything (receiving only IV fluids and a solution of proteins and nutrients). The recovery was slow and painful, but fortunately, God allowed me to make a full recovery.
That day, I realized that you—and no one else—know your own body; when you feel something is wrong, it really is. Such persistent pain doesn't come out of nowhere or appear for no reason. If a clinic or hospital won't treat you or take your pain seriously, you have to go elsewhere; resignation isn't an option. I tried to just accept it, but the pain forced me to take action. Since then—while I don't exactly have regular medical check-ups (though I know I should)—I do try to maintain a reasonably healthy lifestyle. For instance, I make an effort to drink plenty of water and exercise at least three times a week. I also like to keep an eye on my blood pressure, especially now that I’ve entered my forties, haha.
When something comes up, I first try to handle it at home using natural remedies I have on hand, or I consult my cousins by phone (since they are doctors); however, if I don't find a solution, then I go to a doctor's office. Oh, and yes, I am familiar with my family's medical history—something I consider important because it helps me understand myself better and know what to avoid or, at the very least, which diseases I might be prone to.
Well, friends, that’s all for today. I really hope we all give this topic some serious thought; we need to be more attentive to our health, to any changes that might arise in our bodies, and to what we can do for them.
