Roaming For Roasts : Let's Get To Know O'Lieng Coffee

What comes to mind when you first hear the word “Olieng?”

To me, that word sounds like Chinese and instead of coffee, I first thought it was some type of tea. But in Indochina, Oleing or O’lieng is actually a type of coffee. My conviction wasn’t entirely wrong that the word Oliang actually originates from China and is a type of coffee that is brewed with various spices. It sounds like a concoction rather than a coffee but in Thailand and Laos, they have their own ways of serving Olieng Coffee. To me, this is a must-try coffee in Thailand or even Laos as I can say they are unique to that region and is comparable to charcoal coffee in Java or Phin coffee from Vietnam.

In Laos, which is mostly big with their filter coffee culture, you will definitely find Olieng. One in particular is a cafe named O'lieng Vientiane. It is a medium sized cafe that not only serves O’lieng but also various meals, pastries and even selling brewing tools. Of course, like its name, they boast their O’lieng as a signature that you can see below that is served with a liquid sugar, a homemade cookie and low filtered coffee with lots of ice.

O’lieng tastes smooth caramel with a smoky aroma. They don’t really specify the kind of beans they use but from the looks of it, it was a medium dark roast. Certainly, unlike its name, the coffee doesn’t have any hint of spices which is something I expected when ordering the coffee. But then, I am sure they modify the O’lieng in order to cater to everyone’s palate.

The cafe itself was something quite usual. It is similar to many cafes in the heart of Vientiane that tries to mimic the French cafe culture. It really just makes sense considering the history and the strong French influence within the country. So, there was nothing really that special when it comes to the architecture itself. But the coffee, I have to say that in Laos especially Vientiane, as a coffee lover, it’s one of the coffee heavens that you can find in Indochina as the country is also proud of their Bolaven plateau and the coffee that region produces.
