“Just stick a BTS logo and their face, their fans will buy it” said a friend who considers herself an ex- “ARMY”, a nickname referring to BTS fans.

She’s not wrong at all. Many large e-commerce companies in Indonesia hired and partnered with Korean boy bands to be their ambassador and promote their platform. To me, this is clever marketing that could target dozens of young adults to children to buy merchandise, increasing the traffic to the platform, and creating brand awareness.
I still remember that I once accompanied this friend just to hunt some orange juice bottles that had their favorite Korean boy band faces. She told me that it has some resale value even with just the bottle. Not to mention, there’s satisfaction if they can collect all of the bottles, especially the rare ones. Though I thought that was kinda silly, I was still fascinated with how she tried to get all the bottles. Another thing I noticed was when my niece had her birthday. She had a BTS theme party with all the dolls and all the gifts were about BTS. And It was only me, who gave her a doraemon. There are many more examples and this Paldo BTS Hot Brew Coffee is one of them.

I have seen them for quite a while in Korean groceries. I kept wanting to buy them but I thought that I would be silly to get into the hype. But today, out of the blue I gave in. I grabbed one of them and chose the vanilla latte one.

My expectations were quite high.

First, I hoped the coffee was good. Second, the packaging was made of cans instead of plastic. But when I grabbed it, the packaging was plastic. Designed with a full BTS picture on the front, it looks quite classy yet when you touch it, be prepared to know it’s plastic and disappointed.

On the back of the bottle there’s information about the ingredients which I think are quite questionable because it said it may be containing an allergen and one of them may be “crab”. For coffee purists, that is quite questionable.

I chilled the coffee for about 4 hours before drinking it. I was hoping that it would taste similar to Nescafe products. But apparently, theirs is less sweeter and with quite a strong hint of vanilla. Drinking that bottle is like drinking a flavored instant coffee offbrand. For something that costs around 4$ that is not worth it. I swear that I would rather order a tall americano from starbucks than this one. But again, the price is quite reasonable given that it is imported and carries the faces of world famous Korean boy bands.

Do I recommend you to buy the hype?

Maybe not. Unless you are an ARMY, I don’t think there’s a strong reason for you to get a coffee that tastes like any other instant bottled flavored coffee.
