Over the course of years, my mom started to get used to traveling solo. She finds her way learning and integrating herself into society after being a housewife for many years. Despite her age, I salute her bravery to continue learning something new. I suppose it鈥檚 not easy, especially when the world around her has changed so much. She only had recollection of her younger wild days but those have changed. The world that she knows today has transformed into everything digital. She has to download several apps just to travel, easing her way into security checks, dealing with people that she never had to. Luckily, my mom has a friendly face and people are always willing to help or be friendly with her. In fact, 90% of people would help her more than they would to me.
At times, I could become an overprotective daughter. I am afraid that she would get lost, stranded, or even not knowing directions. But so far, that never happened. I keep reminding myself that she鈥檚 an adult too, capable of taking care of herself. Many of the experiences that she tried were all novel. It was giving her more story time for her colleagues at work, family at home or even just that she finally has something to say when hanging out with her group of friends.
Whenever I am traveling with her, we鈥檇 always be a backpacking duo. No kidding, my mom is also just carrying a backpack. We also like to eat out at cheap places, staying at budget hotels, finding great deals, and haggling. The perks traveling with mom is that I get to get everything for cheap sometimes to the point it is embarrassing that my mom haggles too much. She tries to view the world with curiosity that inspires to become less jaded. She makes me want to believe that adventure is still there to be had despite traveling has lost its charm on me. She makes me believe that the world isn鈥檛 so bad.
Her curiosity and enthusiasm during travel reminds me that it was one of the reasons why I travel. I want to get to know people, talk to them, come out of my shell, and discover what鈥檚 out there. I hope people out there can experience what I did with my mom. Sometimes, traveling with your mom isn鈥檛 so bad. Here's to many more flights with her.
