Nigerians have a way of turning serious life lessons into hilarious slangs.
One of my favourites is:
“If you ignore the signs, you will see wonders.”
And honestly, this slang deserves a whole relationship seminar.
Because sometimes, the red flags are not even hiding.
They are standing in front of you, wearing reflective jackets and shouting:
“Sir/Madam, I am here o.
But love will make somebody say:
“No, he’s just going through a phase.”
“She will change when we get married.”
“Maybe I’m overthinking.”
“Everybody has flaws.”
Meanwhile, your instincts have already submitted a resignation letter.
You noticed how they constantly disrespect you.You noticed the lies.
You noticed how they manipulate you whenever you try to set boundaries.
You noticed that their words and actions never match.
You noticed that you are always apologising for things you didn't do.
You noticed that being with them gives you more anxiety than peace.
But because the relationship has few good moments, you convince yourself that the bad ones don't matter.
My dear, that is how “I saw the signs” eventually becomes “I don't know how I entered this situation.
The truth is, not every red flag is a sign that someone is a terrible person. Sometimes, it's simply a sign that the person is wrong for you.
And ignoring incompatibility doesn't make it disappear.
It only postpones the more problems coming for you.
Sometimes, we don't need another sign.
We need the courage to accept the sign we already saw.
Because when you ignore the warning signs for too long…
You will eventually see wonders when you get married.
Marriage is not a rehabilitation center and it doesn't change people's character.
