🇨🇺 A Cuban Vice Dean’s Logbook: First Experiences
✦ ───────────────────────────── ✦
As I approach the end of my third week in my new position as Vice Dean for Academic Affairs at the Faculty of Educational Technologies of the University of Informatic Sciences, I am opening this space to share some of my first experiences in this role, as well as those still to come.
The first thing to say is that I was not looking for this position. I had other plans for my immediate future after obtaining my scientific degree as a Doctor in Social Studies of Science, Technology and Innovation, including looking for commercial opportunities for the applications and services I have been regularly presenting —over the past two months— here on my Hive blog.
But a Doctor of Science degree inevitably exposes you to assignments you did not expect, and in my case I received a proposal directly from the Rector to assume the Vice Deanship of Formation at the aforementioned faculty.
Precisely because I understand the enormous scale of the mission, I had no objections and accepted the challenge. I am genuinely interested in having a direct and meaningful influence on the most important process at a university —undergraduate education— without in any way diminishing the importance of other areas such as research or postgraduate education.
✦ ───────────────────────────── ✦
Bureaucracy matters too
The position comes with a certain amount of bureaucracy, but I am discovering that a significant part of that bureaucracy is useful; it matters.
For example, given the extremely difficult conditions under which university teaching has developed in Cuba this year, with limited face-to-face education and a virtual component affected by the country's chronic problems —very long power outages that subsequently lead to critical connectivity failures— students have fallen behind in their academic plans.
One of my responsibilities as Vice Dean is to adjust their academic plans and guide them toward the best combinations for catching up, placing the subjects they "should" take here and there in each semester of the current academic year.
I am also responsible for analysing the cases of students who re-enter higher education, transfer to my faculty, change their study modality from the Course for Meetings —aimed primarily at working people— to the so-called regular daytime course, among other situations, to place them in the academic year that corresponds to them.
Students who do not complete all their subjects from one academic year to the next, or who have to repeat the year, must also go through these analyses. In these cases, every student is a world of their own.

My first Faculty Teaching Council
This Thursday, I had the opportunity to chair my first Faculty Teaching Council, a space in which I am responsible for supervising the progress of the teaching process.
The council includes the coordinators of each academic year —four under the current curriculum—the heads of the teaching departments —and their branches— attached to our faculty —Computer Science and Mathematics—and student representatives.
For this session, I focused on how teaching is developing in the virtual modality —through the institution's Virtual Learning Environment—, fully aware that there are many problems there with different underlying causes.
The Vice Dean for Formation is, administratively, the person primarily responsible for ensuring that everything works properly, but, once again, I genuinely feel responsible and committed to the effort of deploying a process that connects with students and helps them grow.
✦ ───────────────────────────── ✦
The challenge of supporting students
It is difficult in the current context, but my call to the academic-year coordinators is to maintain very precise oversight of how students are progressing and, consequently, to understand why a certain number of students have not been able to connect to the Virtual Learning Environment —or have not attended the weekly face-to-face sessions, in the case of those living in the capital— and what can be done to help them.
I will keep you informed here about the progress and setbacks of this mission.
