The Invisible Treasures of Childhood: The Scents That Keep Who We Were. [ESP-ENG]
They say that memory is an unpredictable place. We can try hard to recall a date, a name, or a face, and sometimes the mind strives in vain. However, scents do not ask for permission. They don't need you to look for them; they simply appear in the air, brush past your sense of smell, and in a matter of a millisecond, transport you to another era.
Scent is, perhaps, the finest and most resilient thread that connects us to our past. If I had to map my childhood through the senses, I would not do it with photographs, but with fragrances.
I remember, for example, the childhood fascination with cotton candy. It wasn't just its fluffy and almost magical texture that seemed to float between my hands, nor that pastel tone that announced a special day; it was its aroma. A dense, warm, and enveloping sweetness that would cling to fingers and nose, leaving a trail of pure happiness. Smelling cotton candy was a promise that time was not in a hurry and that the only occupation of the afternoon was to enjoy the moment.

That same olfactory nostalgia brings me back to my schooldays, when the school year was just beginning or afternoons were spent between homework and drawings. Nothing compares to the smell of a freshly sharpened pencil. That scent of fresh wood mixed with graphite, the brand-new drawing notebooks, and the concentrated fragrance that released from the pencil case upon opening it. It was the fragrance of learning, of eraser-stained hands, of childhood curiosity, and of a time when creativity was brought to life stroke by stroke on paper, with no screens in between.
Within that same geography of memories lives the unmistakable perfume of new books. There was a time when our portal to the world wasn't bright screens or the endless notifications of social media. Before, life moved at a different pace, and our refuge was neighborhood libraries and bookstores. Stepping into those spaces meant immersing oneself in a sacred silence. Opening a book fresh off the press, flipping quickly through its pages to feel the breeze on your face and breathing in that characteristic smell of fresh ink, crisp paper, and glue, was the beginning of a journey.
But if there are scents that not only bring back memories but revive the soul, they are the ones that come from the kitchen of our childhood. For me, the most valuable perfume in the world is the one that emanated from the hands of my foster mother.

I can still feel the dense, rich scent of chocolate as she roasted it at home, filling every corner with an unforgettable warmth. And alongside it, the matchless aroma of freshly made cachapas with melted cheese. That scent of sweet corn cooking on the budare, combined with the saltiness of good fresh cheese, wasn't just food; it was protection, it was home, it was love made manifest as nourishment.
My foster mother is no longer physically with us, but olfactory memory holds a beautiful power: the ability to overcome absence. Every time the breeze brings me the scent of roasted chocolate or warm corn, time bends. For a second, she is there again, standing in the kitchen, watching over me. The scent brings her back and reminds me that the love she gave us never left.
Our story is not only written in notebooks or saved in digital galleries; it is kept in our lungs, in our chest, in the sensory memory that lives within us. Scents are invisible treasures that guard who we were and those we love.
