What I Learned When I Stopped Counting Followers: My Story on the Healing Power of Genuine Connections. [ESP-ENG]
Today, I'd like to reflect with the community on the true value of authentic connections and why I believe they have a deeply therapeutic impact on our lives.
A Journey Back to My Teenage Years: The Illusion of Numbers
Today, it makes me laugh to look back at my teenage years, right when social media was blowing up. Back then, in the middle of discovering who I was, I fell into a pretty common illusion: I thought that the number of virtual "friends" or accepted requests measured my worth or my impact on the world. There was this innocent desire to be seen, to feel like I belonged, so I accepted everyone without a second thought, believing that stacking up numbers on a screen was something grand and real.
How wrong I was! Experience and time showed me the emptiness behind that dynamic. Those numbers didn’t represent real support, nor were they there when I actually needed a sincere conversation.
Now I look back and smile, because my mindset has completely shifted. Nowadays, when I get requests from strangers, I simply don't accept them. I see no point in collecting contacts just for the sake of it; I’ve come to realize that time and emotional energy are precious and shouldn't be handed out to just anyone. Unlearning that illusion taught me that thousands of superficial interactions can never replace the weight and warmth of a single empathetic look in the real world.
So, What Is a Genuine Connection?
To me, a genuine connection isn't measured by follower counts or how often you speak to someone. An authentic connection is a safe emotional space. It’s that bond where you don’t need to pretend, wear masks, or weigh every word out of fear of being judged.
It’s the certainty that you can show up in your most vulnerable state—with your strengths, but also with your fears and fragilities—and know that on the other side, there is an attentive, empathetic, and respectful presence.
Why Do Authentic Connections Have the Power to Heal?
Human beings naturally seek resonance. When we relate to others with authenticity, connection becomes true medicine for the soul for several reasons:
It eases the weight of vulnerability: When we go through difficult times, pain multiplies if we experience it in isolation. Expressing how we feel to someone who listens with full presence doesn't make the problem disappear, but it does lift the heavy burden of carrying it alone. Feeling understood validates our experience.
It acts as a mirror for growth: Transparent relationships don't just comfort us; they also help us evolve. A genuine bond reflects an honest yet loving view of ourselves, showing us sides that we might not be able to see on our own.
It rewrites our past wounds: Many of our emotional wounds were born in relationships where there was rejection or a lack of affection. Experiencing a bond today based on respect and unconditional acceptance allows us to realize that it is safe to trust and open our hearts again.
Genuine connections don't always happen by chance; they are also cultivated day by day. To attract true people into our lives, we must first be willing to offer that same transparency:
Practicing mindful listening: Being present for the other person without the rush to judge or give unsolicited advice. Sometimes, all someone needs is to know they are being heard.
Taking off our armor: We cannot demand sincerity if we guard ourselves behind reservations or appearances. To receive truth, we must dare to offer it.
Setting healthy boundaries: Learning to say "no" and choosing who we open the door of our world to (both in real life and on social media) is an act of self-love and respect toward our relationships.
Finding people with whom we can connect from the truth of who we are is one of the most valuable gifts for our mental and spiritual health.
Have you ever fallen into that same social media illusion in the past?
