“Nepotism is defined as a favouritism to relatives and loved ones in the job or in political life by someone in power (usually the politician) who has power of influence or any form of command over such things.” - wikipedia Nepotism: where should we draw the line? Nepotism refers to the act of giving opportunities, favors, or privileges to family members or close associates through an abuse of power, position, wealth, or influence, as opposed to any merit.
It is controversial whether nepotism should be frowned upon or encouraged.
Some consider nepotism as a natural aspect of life where families and loved ones help each other. While it is natural for any human being to assist and promote those they are close to, such assistance should not cause harm and disadvantage other equally qualified individuals.
It differs between helping a brother or sister out or giving a promotion on merit compared to hiring an incompetent sibling just because they are your sibling. Of course most of us will not shy away from helping those we care about, but it’s how that assistance benefits only ourselves and our own, thus affecting others is when nepotism is truly negative.
It can negatively impact the morale of those overlooked.
In a corporate environment for example, the workers who continuously achieve the set goals and are more dedicated might be left demoralized and unmotivated if an unfit colleague gets a higher position over them purely for his personal ties to the management.
In politics it has been proven that this phenomenon can often concentrate power in a specific number of families. In film or music, many new talented individuals fail to gain recognition as it relies so much on who you know and connections than who actually performs the better.
Nepotism should be made into a crime depending on the context. It would be nonsensical to criminalise the mere act of assisting one’s children or parents. However, if the ‘support’ involved the use of bribes or corruption, if it directly denied opportunities based on favouritism or if it led to wastage of resources (as in the case of government-backed appointments or ventures), it certainly should be illegal.
Each individual too should consider whether what they do is right or wrong, for regardless of who they might be helping, the impact on others matters.
Though personal connections might not always be a ‘wrong’, to use that privilege at the expense of other talented people, not necessarily the family or friends of the individual concerned would be unfair.
Every effort should be made by an influential individual to ensure that decisions taken are fair and merit-based, not because of one’s familial or friendly connections.
While it is perfectly okay to aid your loved ones and it will probably always remain a part of life, there should be limits and as long as those limitations ensure fair opportunities for everyone concerned, then it should be perfectly fine. It becomes problematic only when those connections hinder everyone else.
