I'lI always remember that day as the first day I understood what courage really meant to me: moving forward, even when I was terrified. Growing up, fear was that familiar companion, always suggesting I shrink from things, make excuses, hide away. But there came a time, an event, that shattered that definition and replaced it with something more empowering-and less about the fear itself.
It was one of those seemingly simple things we all have to do sometimes: stand up and say your piece in front of others. For days beforehand, I was consumed. My chest felt tight, my palms damp; my brain was a non-stop reel of disastrous scenarios.
My voice seemed determined to abandon me entirely-just as soon as all eyes were fixed upon it.
The siren song of avoidance was loud and insistent: "Run away.
It's easier."
And in that specific moment, running away felt not only like an option, but like the only sensible course of action.
But an even more persistent voice, the one that whispers about the "what-ifs" of regret, reminded me that while failing might hurt temporarily, giving up would ache forever. So, with a breath I'm sure didn't quite fill my lungs, I stepped up.
I don't pretend it was seamless. The first few words were shaky; the fear was still present, a prickling sensation under my skin. My voice threatened to falter.
But as I kept talking, something shifted.
The audience, I realized, wasn't looking for perfection; they were listening. The initial dread eased. By the end, my message had been delivered, incomplete and imperfect, perhaps, but delivered.
Relief washed over me, then a surge of an almost unexpected pride. I hadn't become magically brave, by any stretch of the imagination; the nervous shivers were still there. But I had, at last, proved to myself that I was more than just a slave to that fear.
That experience became my bedrock lesson: Courage isn't about not feeling fear; it's about acting anyway. It's the conscious choice to press on when every instinct screams to stop.
Do I still feel fear?
Of course. Anytime I step into unknown territory, the familiar doubts can creep back in.
But I've learned that fear is no longer a signal to turn back.
It's merely an indicator that I'm stretching myself, venturing beyond the safety net.
And in many ways, I'm grateful for that. Those incredible, transformative moments in my life-so often, they begin with a good, honest dose of fear. We may not eliminate our fears, but we can learn to walk beside them, to dance a little with them, and sometimes, to just take one brave step forward.
