Education is a vital component of childhood development, prompting many parents to question where and how their children will receive it best. Choosing between sending a child to traditional school and educating them at home is a difficult decision to make because each alternative has pros and cons, but I believe that traditional schools are on the whole better for children provided parents are involved in their education and development.
Traditional schooling provides an experience difficult to replicate in the home. In addition to learning curriculum based material, children are able to develop social skills such as the ability to communicate, cooperate, share, resolve arguments and respect others regardless of personality and opinions. Building friendships and the emotional development these give is aided by sharing social experiences with classmates.
Without this, children may not be fully prepared for college, careers and adult life.
While schools do maintain a structure to their teaching, parents are still able to encourage exploration of topics, ask questions and formulate independent beliefs outside of the classroom.
Some benefits may arise from home schooling. These parents take responsibility for their child's upbringing and may choose to design the curriculum based on their child's specific learning style and abilities, as well as familial beliefs. Homeschooling may provide some children with a less traumatic school environment (if they are at all struggling with conventional classes); however, it takes much of the parents' time, knowledge, patience, and commitment. Children who spend limited time with young people may therefore be missing out on valuable social development opportunities.
Ultimately, neither extreme is ideal. Parents should not automatically assume the worst about schools simply because they provide government curriculum, but rather also should not assume that having total command over schooling, that all children will do better in this home school environment. Children need both a solid base of knowledge and the ability to interact successfully within society at large.
Perhaps a balance should be sought; sending children to a good traditional school can be offset by the parent's dedication to their child’s overall education at home, be it through additional teaching of other subjects and matters or by encouraging reading and learning about other cultures/perspectives.
Moreover, these children must surely benefit from socializing outside of school. The goal of any education ought to be children prepared to ace tests, yes, but beyond that to learn to adapt and become well-rounded, successful adults; for most of these children, this is more easily achieved in a structured, social school environment with the active participation of their parents.
