This is the eighth chapter of “Unlearning Out Loud”, a space where I allow myself to question some ideas that we have accepted as truths for a long time. This time I want to talk about something that can be difficult to admit: sometimes we simply stop wanting something we once wanted very much.

I used to think that when we set a goal, we had to see it through no matter what. If we gave up halfway, it meant that we had failed or that we had not tried hard enough. There was always that feeling that a goal had to be completed just because one day we had written it down or talked about it with enthusiasm.

Some time ago I came across an old list of projects and things I wanted to do. I started reading it and noticed something that surprised me: several of those things no longer excited me at all. I looked at some of those goals and wondered why I had wanted them so much. At that moment, I felt a little strange, because I had spent time thinking about them and, in some cases, had even made plans to achieve them.

But then I thought that maybe there was nothing wrong with that. We change, our circumstances change, and the things that matter to us can change too. What seemed important to me a few years ago may not have the same place in my life today. And I don't think I have to force myself to want something just because the person I was before wanted it.

I am beginning to understand that abandoning a goal does not always mean giving up. Sometimes it means being honest enough to recognize that we no longer want to go in that direction. It can be uncomfortable because we may feel that all the time and effort we have already invested were wasted. But I don't think they were. Even when a goal is left behind, we can take with us what we learned while pursuing it.

There are also goals that we keep simply because we have already told other people about them. We are afraid that they will ask us what happened, why we stopped, or whether we couldn't do it. And sometimes it is easier to continue pretending that we still want something than to say, “I changed my mind.”

Maybe one of the things I need to unlearn is the idea that every goal has to have a happy ending just because it was once important to me. Some goals have their moment and then stop making sense. Others lead us somewhere else. And there are some that simply need to be left behind so that we can pay attention to what we want now.

I don't think we should feel like failures every time we change direction. Life is not a list that we have to complete without making changes. We can cross things out, add new ones and even leave some pages unfinished. The important thing is that what we are working toward still has some meaning for the person we are today.

Maybe letting go of an old goal is not closing a door because we failed. Maybe it is simply making room for something that we genuinely want now.

And you? What goal did you recently decide to abandon because it no longer represented who you are?
