Hello @holos-lotus community.
Hola comunidad de
@holos-lotus.
This is the fifth chapter of “Unlearning Out Loud”, a space where I allow myself to question some ideas that we have accepted as truths for a long time. This time I want to talk about something so simple, and sometimes so difficult, as saying no. There are yeses that come naturally because we really want to help, we have the time, or we simply feel like being there for someone. But there are also those yeses that we say almost automatically, even though deep down we already know that we don't want to do what we have just agreed to.
It happens to me many times. Someone asks me for a favor, needs me to take care of something, and before thinking about whether I really can or want to do it, I hear myself saying: “Yes, of course.” Sometimes the answer comes out so quickly that only afterward do I ask myself why I said yes. It is not always because I wanted to help. Sometimes I didn't want to disappoint the other person, and I am afraid they will think I am selfish, unhelpful, or less affectionate. Saying yes seemed easier than facing that little discomfort that a no can cause.
Me pasa muchas veces.
Does being empathetic really mean making room for others, even when that leaves very little room for me? I am beginning to understand that there is a difference between being available and being there for everything. Helping when I really can and want to is one thing. Accepting everything because I feel guilty about refusing is something very different.
Setting a boundary does not mean becoming cold. A no can be respectful, kind, and firm at the same time. I don't always need to give a long explanation to prove that I am still a good person. Recently, I listened to a podcast by a friend in which he said, “Explain yourself less; not everyone deserves your explanations.”
Saying no does not necessarily mean loving someone less or caring less. Sometimes it means recognizing that my time, my energy, and my own plans also deserve to be taken into account. I think about how many times I have said yes to spare another person some discomfort and then ended up carrying that discomfort myself. The other person went on with their day, while I stayed thinking about the commitment I had accepted without really wanting to do it.
That may be another kind of imbalance that we rarely talk about: trying so hard not to inconvenience others that we end up constantly inconveniencing ourselves. And, of course, it hurts us.
I don't think I have learned this completely. There will still be requests to which I will answer yes too quickly. Unlearning doesn't mean having perfect boundaries either. For me, it means at least stopping before answering and asking myself: “Do I really want to do this, or am I simply afraid to say no?” That pause can change the answer.
Saying no to others is, many times, the best way to say yes to ourselves. Yes to our time, our energy, our priorities, and our right to choose what we can take on and what we cannot. Kindness should not be measured by how many times we say yes, but by the honesty with which we offer what we are actually capable of giving.
And you? When someone asks you to do something you really don't want to do, what is harder for you: saying “no” or facing the possibility that the other person might feel disappointed? Answer me in the comments; I would love to read you.
