Greeting everyone
I hope your Friday is as chill as your weekend will be. My weekend is filled with visiting friends and gaming if I can help it. We are having an inverter installed into the house on Monday, so we can finally get over these terrible power outages plaguing us for weeks!
But enough about my woes, let's dive into the next update of Fell Dragon!
Bolx’s arm ached, and he struggled to perform the most basic of tasks with it. He wanted to go home and have it dealt with there, but he needed to return with Aidan. He knew that Saita would love to see her son, but he had not been prepared for the darkness that had taken root in the small boy. It was so much like his mother’s that Bolx could immediately see they were related. He lay in bed that night, unable to sleep because of the pain. He decided that he would give him one more day, and then he was going to return and think of a different way to wake Saita.
“Don’t tickle her feet.” Came a small voice from his doorway.
Bolx sat up to see Aidan standing in the doorway. He wondered if the boy could see in the dark as he could, but the stumping of a toe on the doorframe confirmed that he could not.
“Mother has very sensitive feet. She said she has always been that way ever since she was a child.”
“I didn’t know that.” Said Bolx with a grin. “The next time we fight I will pin her down and tickle her feet. Maybe then I can win a fight against her.”
He saw the boy’s eyes grow wide and realised what he said. “What I meant to say was…”
“You like my mom.”
The Saith chuckled and admitted. “Yeah, I always have though I think she deserves someone better.”
He then swung his feet from the bed and added. “Your anger is justified Aidan. You should be allowed to feel it. You were abandoned by your family and now they want to make use of you to help someone else. It can’t feel good.”
“It doesn’t.” growled the boy.
Then, after silence had fallen again, he said. “Is it wrong to feel this way?”
Bolx shook his head. “Your mother was in a very dark place before she went to the Games. You seem to have inherited quite a lot of your emotion-handling skills from her.”
“Is she okay?”
“She’s fine, but things are happening where we need to talk to her, and she just isn’t ready to wake up. There are people who believe having you close will have her reach out for you.”
“She doesn’t love me. She never wanted me. No one ever wanted me.” Aidan ground his teeth together.
“You wouldn’t be here if you didn’t have a role to play.”
Aidan blinked a few times before he nodded his head and said. “Edzeeker used to say the same thing. Good night.”
Then he wandered from the room, once more hitting a toe on the way out. Bolx couldn’t help but smile before he said softly. “He is so your son.”
It took a few days, but eventually, Aidan agreed to go with the Saith. Barik had decided that it was time to return to his home world to finally present his son to his parents and show off his wife. Aidan would be left in the care of Bolx until they returned. At first, Aidan had baulked but knew that Bolx would take him to see his mother. He wanted to see her. To tell her how he had felt these last two years, to make her see how much hurt he felt. He relented and went with the large Saith to the hospital where his mother was being kept. Many people gave the Saith a strange look as he walked around the floors of the hospital with a bright red-haired child, and Aidan nervously flattened his hair. From the Saith, he had seen they were all dark-haired, so seeing a red-haired child must have been strange to them. Until he met Sash.
The woman was tall, she blinked down at him a few times and then said. “Bolx has he been through quarantine? This is a hospital.”
The strict voice coupled with the bright red hair scared Aidan for a second before Bolx said. “He was vaccinated not too long ago when Barik was making plans to come to see the Games. He is clean and was cleared by his house doctor.”
Then the frown on the woman changed to a warm smile. She looked at Aidan and said. “Well, look at you. I don’t even need to ask who you are.”
She squatted to look him in the eye. “I am Sash, and you must be Aidan Saita.”
Confused Aidan looked up at Bolx, who laughed and said. “Just Aidan. I don’t believe he has a family name yet. Unless I am mistaken.”
“Aidan Fire-Fur.” Mumbled the boy.
Sash laughed and got to her feet. “My, what a title and what an impress mane it is indeed.”
Aidan once more tried to flatten his unruly hair. Sash laughed. “Oh, my dad is going to love him! He was convinced redheads don’t exist anywhere else except in our family.”
“Are you my mom’s doctor?” he asked.
“I’d like to think of us as friends, but let’s go with doctor for now if that is easier.”
“He is young Sash, not stupid.” Chuckled Bolx.
The two Saith walked with Aidan still holding onto Bolx’s hand. The two of them paused at a door as someone else stepped from the room. Aidan’s gaze went up and up until they came to rest on a large set of wings. A set of lavender eyes looked down and him, and a wide grin spread across his face.
“My, my, he looks a lot like his mother. My goodness.” Jethron squatted to look Aidan in the face. “Edzeeker is right about you. You are the perfect son.”
“You know Edzeeker?” he asked in surprise.
“We do.” The Dekai tapped his chest and said. “I am Jethron. It is good to meet you after hearing so much about you. Hmm, you are taller than what your mother described. It has been some time, hasn’t it?”
“Can I see my mom now?” whispered Aidan as he tried to not let his emotions get the better of him.”
“Of course. You have her all to yourself for a while. Bolx and I will be around if you need anything, and Sash is going to be monitoring your mother for a few hours while you sit with her.”
“What if I can’t bring her back?” asked Aidan as tears came to his eyes. “What if I fail?”
Jethron chuckled and said gently. “You are not here to complete a mission, Aidan. As nice as it would be if your mother woke in the next couple of days, it is not a necessity. You won’t fail at anything just by sitting with her. Just be careful of her injuries.”
The Dekai ran his fingers through the boy’s hair and grinned. “Larden may just decide to take you as his if we are not careful.”
He then got up and had to hold onto the wall as he did so.
“Uncle?” asked Sash out of concern.
“I will be fine. Still a little weak, but I will manage.” Jethron took a deep breath. “I think I will sit a little with Saita too if you do not mind.”
Aidan gripped Bolx’s hand tightly and pulled it towards the room. The Saith allowed the boy to lead him but let go as soon he noticed his mother and ran to her. It didn’t take Aidan long to figure out where she was injured before he used a chair to climb up on her left side. He noted the new scars she bore, but that wasn’t what had attracted him to her face. She looked like she was finally at peace. In all the time that he had known her she never looked peaceful while she slept. He didn’t want to wake her knowing that she was finally sleeping in peace. Still standing on the chair he leaned forward to put his forehead to hers, the way she had always shown affection to him, before and after her memory loss.
Sleep Mother. Rest while you can. I am here when you are ready.
He then sat back in the chair and watched her steady breathing as she continued to sleep.
“I miss you.” He whispered sadly.
Sash made Jethron sit down on the spare bed in the room, one that had been prepared for Aidan if he had joined. The Dekai was pale and seemed to be on the edge of wanting to vomit. It took a glass of water before he was able to say.
“The System recognises the boy as a potential host. The feedback was more than what I could handle at that moment.”
“What do you mean?” asked Bolx. “It isn’t going to try and leave Saita and attach to Aidan, is it?”
“Hopefully not no, though I doubt it has the capability to be able to do that.” Jethron looked to where the sad little boy was sitting looking up at his mother. “He inherited everything that was done to his mother. He would have made a better host than her and likely would have had a symbiotic relationship where her mother suffers a parasitic relationship. Edzeeker was right.”
“Then we should have…” started Bolx.
“No!” snapped Jethron. “No… the boy is where he needs to be now. Saita will fight for him to have a normal childhood, and we should do the same.”
“Well, he certainly wasn’t scared of you.” Said Sash. “I guess his time with Edzeeker was significantly better than what it was with his mother.”
“It was.” Jethron sighed as he looked at his hand. “I could feel it in his memories. From the day he drew breath till the boy came to his mother he was showered with love and affection. Edzeeker treated him like a son. He was sheltered and cared for but hunted like his mother, not by the Serpent but by the mad doctor. He wanted to replicate his success with Saita, and Edzeeker wanted to hide him. Saita must have fought the doctor to allow them to escape, likely how she lost her memory and was found while Edzeeker wasn’t around. But I am only guessing here.”
The Dekai sighed heavily. “The two of them are so similar and so damaged.”
“Poor kid. Never stood a chance.”
“He will if the Serpent can be put down.”
And there you have it, son and mother reunited! See you all next week to see if Aidan's presence helps his mother.
