Back then we were engaged, and he came to visit me early in the morning at my parents’ house. I remember we’d been wanting to go to the cinema for a while, so we went, but just as the film was starting, we popped out for a bite to eat at ‘La Pelota’, a place that serves food very close to the cinema we wanted to go to. It was quite cold that day, but the weather was pleasant. We ordered arroz moro with pork fillet; it was delicious and the staff were very friendly.

When we’d finished lunch, we waited for a while in a park until it was time for the film; once that time had passed, we went in. The billboard said they were showing a ‘Silente’ film, which means it was a silent film – the characters didn’t speak throughout the film. The person collecting the tickets warned us about this several times, and was very surprised that we still insisted on going in to see the film.

The truth is that, against all odds, we loved the film; it even made us laugh quite a lot. We discovered that silent films have their own charm. Beauty isn’t found only in words; sometimes it’s found in the silences too.

When we left there, we headed to one of our favourite spots in Havana, the garden at the Hotel Nacional. We sat on those swings we love so much and started chatting about life and our future whilst gazing out at the vast sea that framed the view.

Then we went back to my neighbourhood and had some pizzas at a nearby café; we had a brilliant time – we could see the starry night sky, and the place was full of beautiful lights. They say that when you’re with the right person, the ordinary things in life can become extraordinary. That’s how it’s been every day with my husband, from then until now.
