My first time at Fábrica de Arte Cubano
In July 2019 a friend was on vacation in Havana, staying right near the Fábrica de Arte Cubano. I had never been. We said let's meet there and I'll get to know the place, and that was the whole plan, although you can tell from the photos that we did spend time on our outfits.
Walking in was mind-blowing. I didn't even know where to look first. There was a huge wall of couples kissing against a red background, another made of colorful keys shaping something like the island, a heart built from LIBRE and OCUPADO signs that works pretty well as a summary of half of Havana's relationship status, a giant spiderweb, and a dark room full of constellations where we ended up making faces I'd rather not analyze. Also a five peso bill with footballers in hammocks that kept me busy for a good while trying to figure it out. And the skeleton dog with hearts, of course, where we both took a photo as if it were mandatory.
Afterwards we sat outside at a yellow table with something cold to drink, because the heat doesn't forgive anyone, not even in an art gallery.
Today it is still one of my favorite places in Havana. My friend is no longer in Cuba and I'm still here, so these photos are what I have left of that afternoon. I hope she comes back on vacation someday and we do the whole tour again, this time with more calm.
