Hello, my friends.

Maybe you’ve noticed that lately I need to vent and have a catharsis in order to keep going. Because that’s what Cuba is: a country where the contradictory becomes everyday life, where the illogical ends up being the logic of each day. If there’s anything that characterizes this island, beyond sweet potato, rice, and bread with whatever there is, it’s its ability to surprise you with situations that anywhere else in the world would make you ask yourself if you’re in a dream or in a Monty Python movie.

What can I say about the dual currency? Well, that’s already history, but the spirit of that madness persists. Now we have only one CUP, but prices shot up and the salary remains that mystery that doesn’t even cover bus fare. A Cuban spends their life making do. And when I say making do, I don’t mean a mathematical equation, but how to stretch a month with what anywhere else in the world wouldn’t even last a week.

But the absurd isn’t only economic. It’s the very DNA of Cubans. Look at food: one day there’s chicken, the next there isn’t, the next it comes back as if nothing happened, but the price changed three times and the weight went on vacation. People line up without knowing what they’re going to buy, because “if you don’t line up, you don’t eat,” they say. Then they get to the counter and it turns out that what was there ran out two hours ago, but you stay anyway, because who knows if a little box of something might suddenly appear.

Transport is another gem of absurdity. Waiting for a bus at the stop can be a mystical experience. It shows up after four hours of waiting, and when you get on, the driver is listening to music at full volume while dodging potholes that look like lunar craters. And you’re packed in, sweating, thinking how nice it would be to have a car, but cars cost as much as an apartment, and spare parts have to be sent for through a relative or friend living abroad.

The streets are full of potholes, the sidewalks are an obstacle course, buildings are falling apart, but they paint them in pretty colors so they don’t look so ugly. Of course, Cubans paint the façade so you don’t notice that inside the roof is caving in. And what can I say about technology? We have internet that goes at its own pace, a little slow, a little intermittent, and a monthly data package that isn’t enough for anyone. People spend their days with their phone glued to their hand, watching series, movies, or whatever’s on, because after all, for the life we’re living… And when the power goes out, which is another national absurdity, everyone goes out into the street, sits on the steps, and starts talking about life: about the neighbor, about the government, about the blockade. But always with a joke, because a Cuban without a joke isn’t Cuban.

Y si no tienes, te inventas.

We can’t forget fashion. Here people dress as best they can, and often as they’d like to, but they can’t. Brand-name clothing is a luxury, but ingenuity turns an old pair of pants into something “vintage.” That’s what it means to be Cuban: turning what you have into what you need. And if you don’t have it, you make it up. But Cuba’s greatest absurdity isn’t the lack of things, but Cubans’ ability to be happy without them. Because Cubans laugh when there’s nothing to eat, fall in love when there’s no house, sing when there’s no electricity, and dance when everything is wrong. That’s the true absurdity: that in the midst of so much chaos and absurdity, people keep being people, keep dreaming, keep loving. That’s the greatest paradox, one that even someone born here sometimes doesn’t understand.

Cuba is the country of absurdities because the absurd is the only way to understand reality. And if it doesn’t seem absurd to you, it’s because you haven’t lived a week on this island of contradictions that makes you smile even in the hardest moment. But that’s how we love it, because more than a country, it’s a state of mind. And in that state, everything is possible, even if there’s almost nothing.
