Depending on Luck

There are phrases that nestle in your mind and begin to spin around, drifting aimlessly. I heard this particular phrase some time ago, I don’t recall exactly where, but I suppose the phrase itself is what matters most, not its origin: "Your life will go as your luck in cards goes." I believe this captures a significant aspect of existence: luck or, more precisely, chance. Sometimes, while awaiting the outcome of an event, I repeat to myself: "It all depends on luck." I always say it in a very low voice, so that others won’t hear me and discover that I believe in superstitions like luck; I whisper it like a mantra for good fortune. Life, that constant ebb and flow of events that unfold while we are busy making plans, seems to be governed by the whims of random elements. This capricious chance, what we call "luck" is a reality that makes no distinction based on merit, effort, family background, or social standing. One cannot help but wonder: is "luck" simply an elegant name we give to our own inability to comprehend chaos?

And so, I seek catharsis, an emotional cleansing, driven by a daily need to understand luck and how it shapes my life. My life is simple; there are no great tragedies beyond the inherent nature of existence, no pressing needs beyond the scope of my everyday routine, yet, the chaos I call "luck" still holds sway over me. And so, depending on luck, there are moments when everything goes well, and others when, for no apparent reason, something suddenly breaks within the soul. Yet, this fracture does not destroy us; rather, it leaves us feeling lighter, simpler. In such moments, a song might arrive at just the right time, or a stranger on the street might smile for no reason, or rain might fall to purify the air when it has become stifling. "Two parts cement, two parts sand", I once heard this, and how true it is: luck, or chaos, gives and takes away in equal measure.

I discovered, quite unexpectedly, that luck shares a strange relationship with the soul, much like a dance. This is why what we desire does not always come to pass, and why what does happen is not always what we actually needed. Yet, this discrepancy, this fissure between our expectations and our daily reality, reshapes the landscape of the soul, allowing new rivers to flow through it. It is as if the universe possessed a peculiar sense of humor, offering us roses with thorn-laden stems, gifts wrapped in sandpaper.

I think of those who wait for their turn to be happy, hoarding patience as if it were currency for a future they long for, a future that never arrives. I wonder: does luck work the same way for them? Perhaps they possess luck, but fail to notice it, trapped as they are in the act of waiting. Perhaps the waiting consumes all their attention, blinding them to the many worthwhile things surrounding them. If only they believed in luck the way those with nothing to lose believe in it, they might realize that the future does not arrive all at once; instead, it is composed of small, chaotic fragments of both happiness and sorrow. Ultimately, luck depends on our willingness to look events squarely in the face and find meaning in them, even when the outcome is imperfect. I have made a decision: I have chosen to believe that life is not a straight line leading toward an unchangeable destination. Instead, life is a series of small shipwrecks on deserted islands, islands from which we emerge transformed, only to set sail once more across the same sea, eventually to be shipwrecked on yet another island. On each new island, we are granted the opportunity for change, a chance to cast off the weight of past losses and failures, to discard whatever no longer serves us, before returning to the sea of tragedies to await the next island, until, perhaps, we find one where we truly wish to stay. In this context, "luck" is simply those bright, fleeting moments found amidst the chaos of islands and memories.

In this process, this aimless navigation, luck is not some vague, abstract figure; rather, it acts as an antihero, at times an ally, at others an executioner, bestowing and taking away with equal indifference. And so, I let go of the desire for luck to always be "fair." I accept, with composure, though not with resignation, whatever conditions it may bring when it rolls its dice. It might rain on my island today, but tomorrow the sun could shine; the only choice I truly have is whether to dance in the rain or sit and watch from the window of my cabin.

There is a certain sense of mastery in accepting that I am not in control, a paradox, much like life itself. It is a definitive farewell to the modern, conditioned expectations surrounding love, success, and "packaged" happiness. Because, yes, things do go wrong, but not always because of us. Sometimes, it is simply a matter of chance, and against chance, there are no weapons. Luck, that invisible entity with no discernible face, is real; it plays an unpredictable role, one we often fail to notice until it is too late. And if not everything depends on us, then not everything is our fault.

We all carry something with us, and luck, much like pain,
Luck is democratic in its distribution, even for those who, from a distance, appear to have no cracks in their armor. Luck comes to everyone through the same random chance; some have simply learned how to conceal it.

Sometimes, I imagine luck as an elusive, pale woman dealing cards from an infinite deck. She doesn’t look at the cards, nor does she look at the recipients, she simply deals. We mean nothing to her; we owe her nothing, and she owes us nothing. Yet, we attribute our triumphs and defeats to her, even though she has no way to respond other than through the next turn of chance. We pray to her in silence when we are in need; we invoke her when we hope for love. But she does not listen, luck has no ears. She possesses only hands that deal without discernment, without pause, and without haste. Luck is cosmic indifference, and in that, I find a certain peace: if I don’t matter to her, then I need expect no more from her than what I expect from myself and my own random fate. So, I accept what comes my way, let go of what is taken from me, and carry on.

I do not know if my words hold any value beyond what the act of writing them meant to me on this stormy afternoon, with the bitterness of coffee still on my lips. I do not know if anyone will read this and share their own relationship with this lady, their moments when she was for them, or against them. I suspect that, like everything else, that will depend on luck.
