Cuando coincide regalo y cambio de lux/When a Gift Coincides with a Lux Change (Esp-Eng)
Hello, my friends. What a pleasure to greet you again and return to this community. I hope you are all enjoying an excellent day.
I’ll tell you that a few days ago I went to get a lux change in my hair, but not just any change; it wasn’t a dye or a keratin treatment to straighten it, no sir. It was a radical change: I shaved my head. I had been thinking about it for a while until I decided to do it. It’s not the first time I’ve cut my hair like this, and although there were people in favor and people against it, I did what I wanted. And I’m very happy and satisfied with my little hair; I feel lighter, it’s practical, and above all economical. In the coming months I’ll spend less on shampoo and conditioner. I’ll spend less time styling my hair.
On the other hand, that same day I received great joy. A package arrived from Brazil, one of those you wait for anxiously. It was no small thing: a friend who has been over there for a while sent me a box that looked small but weighed like a sack of cement. When I opened it in the living room, I almost fell backward. It was a treasure of the kind you hardly see around here anymore.
The first thing that came out was a French perfume, no less. The little bottle has a beautiful rose-shaped cap. “Oh my God, that surely smells like rich people!” And so it did. When I opened it, it smelled like Paris, like an expensive store, like those things you see in old magazines. I put it on the table carefully, as if it were a relic, because a perfume like that is thanked for on bended knee.
Then a Palmolive soap appeared. Something that here is a luxury. It seems silly, but it isn’t. Here one is grateful even for the humblest soap, and if it’s Palmolive, even better. That clean smell, like old-fashioned soap, brightens your day. I put it in the wardrobe so the clothes would pick up a good scent, and then use it, of course.
But the most important thing came later: the medicines. There were several little boxes, some pills for blood pressure, others for pain, and some vitamins I had needed for a long time. And also a bottle of Chanca Piedra capsules. With these empty pharmacies and sky-high prices, having someone send you medicines from far away is a gift that money can’t pay for. It was a great blessing fallen from heaven—well, from Brazil.
And to top it off, the box contained food supplies that made a party in the kitchen: oil, Quaker, milk, sugar, and salt, and others. Oil, as you know, is sky-high; the Quaker, which I love and which is a reliable breakfast for my parents; sugar sweetens even bad times; and salt—well, salt is salt, and even that is scarce here. My friend doesn’t know what she has done by sending me all this. But she does know that I am infinitely grateful to her.
When I finished taking everything out, I kept looking at the empty box and felt a mixture of joy and nostalgia. Joy for my friend’s gesture—although she is far away, she doesn’t forget me. Nostalgia because one wishes these things weren’t an event, but part of normal life. But that’s how it is in hard times: a gift from Brazil becomes a celebration. And I’m not talking only about perfume, soap, or food; I’m talking about the affection that comes inside each package. That truly has no price.
