Fair warning, this is a quick update. It won’t be very photo heavy. The next one will, though. Promise. Following up on my last blog, I’d just gotten back from a three day drive to Los Angeles. I visited my friends Ryan and Arlo in Grand Junction, saw Jasmin of @vintagevandalizm in Vegas and finally got to shoot with Cervena Fox. Once I got back, I took my wedding payday and finally pulled the trigger on something that’s been years overdue. I bought a spec’ed out M1 13” MacBook Pro.
It’s hard to believe, but I’ve been working on a 2012” MacBook for over 8 years! Take nothing away from it. Some of the best money I’ve ever spent, but with the release of Big Sur, I was sad to discover that my faithful workhorse was end of life. It couldn’t even install the new update. That mid 2012 MacBook was cutting edge at the time with a radical redesign and the first Retina display. No new body, but the internals on this thing are next generation. The first five nanometer processor in a consumer computer that I’m away of.
I went through Hell getting this thing operational. There was a display failure during the initial set up. I spent two days jumping through hoops and writing Terminal commands, but I did eventually get to a point that I was able to reinstall Big Sur. The first thing I did once it was set up is test SideCar. For me, this was a holy grail of photo editing. Full MacOS functionality and software, on my iPad Pro [more or less]. Combined with the Apple Pencil, it seemed too good to be true. This was my dream set up, and I can’t understate how meaningful it is that you all support me here.
I’m going to share this preview of the 13” M1 MacBook Pro and iPad Pro SideCar work flow in the next few days but I wanted to share this first look at a new edit of Renee Olsetad from our recent shoot together in Hollywood. It feels awkward when you're leaning something new, even if it's better, but once I get this down, it's going to be a game changer. Another advantage is, I can edit in bed now! I’ll have more to share soon, and a look at SideCar editing for the photographers. Thanks for all the love and support. For more photography and technology, follow me here @kommienezuspadt.
