Just after midnight and I’m winding down from a day of running, writing, cooking, cleaning, mushroom cultivation and 3D printing. I’m currently just trying to stay up long enough to swap out another grow block of mushroom substrate in the Instapot […that’s the hobbyist way of sterilizing the bags but just one takes 2.5 hours] and seeing if there’s enough progress on my 7 hours 3D print to know whether or not it failed before I fall asleep. All in all, a good day. I was able to run bags of chicken of the woods to friends including @ghostfish. I got a couple of hours in at
@caffetto to work on a writing project and I’ll have more time tomorrow afternoon while waiting in the Tesla lounge while my Model 3 has a sensor replaced.
I’ve really been coming to terms with the undiagnosed ADHD lately. A lifetime of obsessive hobbies that eventually get swapped out for new obsessions. Actually, I think that’s one of the reasons I took to the Hive platform so quickly. I’ve got an endless stream of shit I’m passionate about and I like to write! Of the many, as you probably know, photography was and still is an enormous part of my life. I’ve been dipping back in to some old shoots from years ago, editing photos for clients that did kind of get lost in the fray around COVID. I don’t like owing people, even if that chapter of my life is closed as far as shooting. This is one of those hidden gems I somehow managed to overlook the first time I made my picks from this session.
I recently went off the cliff with a big purchase. For years I’ve kept my eyes on a company called SIRUI. They started manufacturing what was always considering an impossible lens. A low cost anamorphic lens that could fit a suite of mirrorless body’s, including my Nikon ZII. Over the past three years, I’ve been shooting a ton of video which made me consider this investment even more. Recently, though, the released two autofocus lenses, a 20mm and a 40mm, and that was enough for me. I had to have one. I’m working on a documentary and a short film with my friend Christine so the timing seemed right. It’s in my hands and I’m looking forward to shooting more test footage this week.
I’ve dabbled in anamorphic film making before. During COVID when everyone was locked down, I was getting out of the house more than ever. A company called Moondog Labs made a small anamorphic lens that fit in a case over an iPhone and I was able to take it out with me on my electric unicycle while I explored an empty city. I got great footage and cut up this short film in the day in the life of a pandemic. This SIRUI lens, though, this is on a much more professional level. More videos to come as I figure it out. Thanks for reading as always. Follow me for more photography, illustration, sculpting and all of the other topics my undiagnosed ADHD bring the blog!
