Happy Wednesday Hivers!

Are you allergic to seafood? When did you first discover that you had an allergy?

Well, I’ve noticed that allergies don’t always seem to be something we’re born with. Sometimes, they can develop later in life, even when we’ve been eating certain foods without any problems for years.

When I was younger, I don’t remember being restricted from eating any particular food because of an allergy. I could eat whatever I wanted without worrying about having an allergic reaction. However, when I reached the age of 30, I started noticing something different happening to my body.

Whenever I ate shrimp, my skin would become itchy, and I would sometimes have difficulty breathing. That was when I realized that something was wrong. Since then, I’ve made it a habit to carry antihistamines with me, especially when eating out, because you never really know all the ingredients that go into the food being served.

But hey, this blog isn’t really about my own experience. It’s about my mom and, of course, about raising awareness among others who might be experiencing the same thing without even realizing it.

Some people may not know they have a seafood allergy because they haven’t experienced any noticeable symptoms yet. Others may develop an allergy later in life, even if they’ve been able to eat seafood without any problems before.

That’s why it’s important to pay attention to how our bodies react to the food we eat. Sometimes, what we used to enjoy without a second thought may eventually become something we need to be cautious about.

A few weeks ago, my mom was invited to eat out by someone from our church, so she didn’t have lunch at home. When she returned home, everything seemed fine. She looked normal and didn’t complain about feeling anything unusual.

However, around 6 p.m., she started feeling itchy. The itching was still tolerable, so she decided to take a half-bath, especially since the weather was extremely hot that day.

By 9 p.m., I was already in my room, getting ready to sleep, when my mom knocked on my door and immediately opened it. She asked me to look at her face because the itching had become really bad.

When I looked at her, I noticed that her face was swollen and very red. At that moment, I immediately remembered my own experience because what she was going through looked very similar to what had happened to me before. The only difference was that I had difficulty breathing during my allergic reaction, while my mom mainly experienced severe itching and swelling on her face and chest.

I immediately grabbed my medicine kit and took out an antihistamine, which I gave her. I also gave her some ice to use as a cold compress to help reduce the swelling.

Then, I asked her what she had eaten for lunch. Our dinner that evening consisted only of vegetables, so I wanted to know what she might have eaten earlier that day. She told me that she had eaten seafood, particularly shrimp.

I immediately suspected that she might have developed a shrimp allergy. However, my mom found it hard to believe because she had eaten shrimp many times before without experiencing any itching or other allergic reactions.

I explained to her that food allergies can develop at any age, even if we have been eating the same food for years without any problems. Sometimes, we only discover that we have an allergy when our bodies begin to react differently to certain foods.

Since that incident, my mom has completely avoided eating shrimp.
