Remembering Our Elementary Days: My Elementary Classmates Get-Together

I’m not really fond of attending class reunions. Based on what I’ve observed and what I’ve heard from my friends, reunions sometimes seem to focus more on people’s achievements rather than simply getting together, catching up, and having a good time.

Not everyone in a batch becomes successful in the traditional sense, and not everyone gets the chance to go to college. Some people choose to work right away because they need to help support their families instead of pursuing higher education. So when a reunion becomes too focused on achievements, someone who feels like they haven’t accomplished much compared to others might end up feeling inadequate or even feeling sorry for themselves.

That’s honestly the part I don’t like about reunions. But of course, that’s just my personal opinion.

However, two days ago, I received a message from a friend from elementary school saying that one of our former classmates had arrived in town and wanted to meet up with our elementary classmates.

Whenever there’s a reunion or get-together with my elementary classmates, I’m always happy to attend because it’s different from other reunions. Whenever we get together, we don’t focus on achievements or possessions. Instead, we spend our time remembering the things we did when we were kids, the funny, silly, and unforgettable moments we shared growing up.

Most of my elementary classmates lived in the same barangay, so we knew each other’s families very well. We knew the parents, siblings, and other family members of almost everyone in our batch. Because of that, we never really feel the need to ask things like, “Where are you working now?” “What’s your position?” or “Do you have your own business?”

Instead, we just bring up all the crazy and silly things we did when we were kids, and once someone remembers one of those stories, everyone ends up laughing like crazy. Those childhood memories are what make our get-togethers so special.

So, I didn’t hesitate to say yes. Only eight of us were available, so we decided to gather at one of our classmates’ houses, which has always been our usual meeting place.

We just bought some fish and pork and grilled them. Nothing fancy or expensive, just simple food. We gathered on their terrace, and that’s where the laughter and storytelling began.

One of our batchmates suggested that we move to Siarbang, also known as “Little Siargao,” in Hilongos. So we brought camping chairs and the leftover food. Since there were only a few of us, we just bought some barbecue and added a few alcoholic drinks. Then we continued our conversations, sharing stories and laughing about all the crazy things we did when we were younger.

This is exactly why I enjoy attending get-togethers with my elementary classmates. It’s not about comparing achievements, careers, possessions, or who has accomplished more in life. It’s simply about being together, remembering our childhood, and laughing about the silly things we did back then.

For me, a good reunion shouldn’t leave you feeling stressed or like you need to prove something. You should go home with a happy heart and a big smile because of all the funny stories and unforgettable memories you shared with people who knew you when you were just a kid.

After all these years, we may have taken different paths in life, but whenever we get together, it feels like we’re those same kids again, laughing at our old stories and enjoying each other’s company. And honestly, those are the kinds of reunions I’ll always be happy to attend.
