15 June, 2026 Freewriters Daily Writing Prompt (Day 3135) | Prompt: I can't drive that (No sé conducir eso)
MicroFiction: A 250 word story format that I often utilize to address the daily prompts. The story today is written using the word prompt "I can't drive that."
...To drive something usually means a vehicle of some type. The word can also mean an action to move an idea or concept forward. For this story, I chose to use the common meaning. Normally, individuals select vehicles they like for a number of reasons. It can be the style, color, performance, or price. I share a story of one teen's desire to own a vehicle, but on his terms, given he'd no funds to purchase one of his own.
For my theme, I was inspired by and utilized the @daily.prompt's publishing of 15 June 2026, Freewriters Community Daily Writing Prompt Day 3135: I can’t drive that!.
Below is my story:
Helen’s swollen ankles still ached from double shifts at Otto's Discount Palace. She raided her savings and borrowed to buy Leon a dented, ten-year-old vehicle.
She proudly handed him the keys.
He tossed them back at her, scoffing. "I can't drive that junk. My friends will laugh."
Helen’s heart shattered, but didn’t argue. Instead, she stored the spare keys, continuing to pay car insurance. She then adjusted her schedule so Leon was forced to walk to the bus stop at dawn.
As the humidity peaked near summer, Leon’s dissatisfaction with hour-long public transit commutes intensified. Helen listened until she'd heard enough, then stood and silently walked away.
"What's wrong? Didn't you hear me?" he hissed.
"I heard you clearly." Helen paused, then turned. "Now hear me. You're not entitled to anything in this life. You earn it with respect and hard work. I don't have to do anything for you. I choose to because I birthed you. Give respect; get respect. What you don't realize is that your buddies are laughing behind your back not because the car is used, but because they're driving whatever their parents can afford. You're still walking."
The next Monday, Leon approached his mother, wiping off sweat. "I got a job, but need transportation. Are those keys still available?"
Nervously, he waited.
She smiled. "Yes, to a grateful son."
He grabbed them, then headed to the driveway.
Driving to work, Leon finally understood that a vehicle was a single parent's sacrifice; not a prop for his social status.
Para mi tema, me inspiré y utilicé la publicación de @daily.prompt de 15 June 2026, Freewriters Community Daily Writing Prompt Day 3135: I can’t drive that!.
A continuación mi historia.
¿No me has oído?», siseó él.
*«Te he oído perfectamente». «Ahora escúchame a mí. Tú sigues yendo a pie».
