There are family traditions that endure from generation to generation. For example: one of my paternal great-grandparents made sure for a long time that his offspring gathered every month, at least once at his house. Time passed, the grandchildren grew up and took different directions but the tradition was continued by my grandparents, with their 5 children and 9 grandchildren. I remember that in my childhood the family would get together Sunday by Sunday, rain, thunder or lightning.

Over the years, the life of each one of them has taken different paths that at times cross to resume their route. Some have moved to another municipality or province, others have found work abroad spending several years outside Cuba and others have emigrated permanently. Although communication among us has never been lost, there are few moments when the whole family can coincide. However, there are traditions that are maintained no matter the passage of time and distances. Sometimes those who are abroad make their vacations coincide with those traditional dates of family reunion: July and December.

In order not to lose the habit, this past July the family got together. At least those of us in Cuba. There was a representation of three generations. As usual I arrived early in the morning and found my grandfather in one of his hobbies: tobacco twisting. He doesn't smoke, but he grew up among these crops and a good part of his life has been dedicated to work in that branch, and little by little the rest of the members arrived.

For me these meetings have a special nuance. They evoke very pleasant experiences from my childhood and adolescence. It is impossible for me not to remember the soul of the family: my grandmother. She is physically gone, but it is indisputable that her presence haunts everyone's house... her house. Especially on those days when we get together after a long time without meeting.I believe that her aura is what makes us coordinate our times when we haven't met for a long time.

Quiero compartirla contigo.

This time was no exception. Gathered in what used to be the kitchen where Mima (my grandmother) prepared the family lunches, we enjoyed a pleasant time among family anecdotes, jokes, heated discussions about baseball, competitions to see who could drink the most mango milkshakes (my aunt's milkshakes are famous in San Vicente). Among the anecdotes evoked that day was one related to my grandmother in relation to a family reunion day in July, in which there was no traditional piglet with which these meetings were celebrated. I want to share it with you.

It turns out that my grandmother, like all country women, always kept chickens. She took great care of them and my grandfather took care of the pigs. At that time they had a piglet that they wanted for a mother (to give birth to her) and they paid attention to her as if the animal was made of glass. The day of the appointment came and there was no piglet for the family meal. There was chicken, but bertico@bertico (my dad) and one of his brothers wanted to eat the traditional dish that day.

For days before, they had tried the possibility of eating the suckling pig, but my grandmother did not agree to their proposals as she had another purpose in mind. Days went by and the longed-for pork did not appear. Then, remembering my grandmother's obsession with raising chickens, they decided to put on a show. They gathered a few feathers, sprinkled them in the piglet's pen and began to shout: "Puerca, Puerca! Mima, run, the piglet ate a chicken! In short: So much for the enterprise with the mother pig! And of course that meeting was also celebrated with pork.

In everyone's house there is a princess, her name: Anyelin. Like all princesses, she has a court of subjects who second her in her mischief. This time it occurred to her that one of my uncles should dress up in her clothes. So it was done ... or at least it was tried. The truth is that in every prank this girl always finds someone to convince and if she does not succeed at least she confuses him and ends up giving in to his requests.

Another of the moments we all look forward to at these gatherings is story time with Papito, my aunt's husband. He always has a story to tell in which he coincidentally emerges victorious from the most difficult situations. On one occasion I asked him if he won all his fights and with a mischievous look he told me: "Of course I have lost... but that story should be told by the one who won it".

There are many anecdotes about these family reunions. I hope to tell them here later. For now I want to thank you for making it to the end of the post.
