Reading charjaim@charjaim's post reminded me of a conversation I had with some friends a few days ago. We talked about the importance of allowing our children to face frustrations from a young age.

I'm referring to everyday frustrations. We live in a world full of tension and frustration. In fact, I think we're facing them from the moment we come into the world. Just think... we're born crying!
That's why I don't think we should be afraid of facing bitter pills in life. We grow by facing them. Of course, the stories charjaim@charjaim tells us are very difficult pills to swallow.

Some pills are more bitter than others, more or less digestible, as a friend would say. When it comes to a violation of the most basic rights of human existence, or simply some event that causes discomfort in someone who we know cannot defend their rights, it can be very bitter, and if it's a child, it's even more difficult.

But the hardships will always be within reach (or, in today's technological world, just a touch away with our fingertips). We can't avoid that. That's why it's so important for me to reflect on this topic.

I could talk to you about how to face bitter experiences with assertive behavior. It would be a good point to talk about—more than good, it's necessary. Learning to claim our rights without violating those of others is fundamental to our mental health.

However, I want to focus my reflection on the point where I could have reacted... differently, so to speak, during a situation that caused me discomfort a few days ago.

I write, and beyond making you reflect, I reflect on myself, convinced that putting my thoughts on paper helps me clarify them and analyze them from a different perspective.

Without going into details, a few days ago I was complaining to someone about their ingratitude for some help I had offered them. The truth is, they behaved rudely, really rudely (keep in mind that I'm referring to a version of the story where I'm the victim).

Why did they behave rudely? Well, because I sacrificed my time, some projects, the occasional trip, to help them, and now, not only did they not thank me, but they told me to my face that they had no one to help them, that they were alone.

As they say in good Cuban: I was blown away like a coffee maker!... But don't worry, I also cooled off quickly, because I remembered several things. First: I was the one who decided to make the sacrifices, so I have no complaints. I was responsible for what was happening to me.

With that in mind, I still had a bitter taste in my mouth. Then I came to another conclusion: I was arguing with someone who, no matter how many arguments and facts I refreshed his memory, had no intention of breaking out of his victim role.

So I told myself, here, if you don't get out of this situation, you'll continue to sour your soul, and the responsibility is yours, jrobe@jrobe, no one else's. In other words, every minute you continue here, you'll be perpetuating the negative emotions this situation generates.

Continue the soliloquy: you have no power over what others do, but you do have power over how you interpret this situation and how it affects you. You decide, I continued.

You can imagine what I did after that self-reflection! I invite my friends yventura@yventura and neuropoeta@neuropoeta to contribute to our reflection from their respective sciences.

Grateful for your company until the end, I send you a friendly hug.
