I was operated on twice. One operation was during my childhood. I didn't even know about it; I just grew up, saw the scar, and was told that it was from an operation. The second operation was more recent, a couple of years ago.
I was much older before the second operation was performed. Before the operation, it was a living hell for me. I struggled with pain constantly, and my life was so miserable.
The problem was in my lower abdominal region, which was swollen. I couldn't lift heavy objects, walk long distances, let alone run. I had to live every day with strange pains. I don't know what it feels like to wake up every day without pain in my body.
After the operation, I had to wear a wrapper for a whole two months, but I was happy because I was finally free from that problem. I felt like a new person, and so I began wondering what would have happened to me if not for the surgeon who operated on me. It is actually a life-saving profession.
So, if I were to choose any profession, it would be surgery because, looking back, I can relate to the pain patients go through, and it would be my pleasure to be in a position to help them get relief from their pain.
But then again, I want to complete my story.
The operation was performed after my WAEC (West African Examinations Council) examination, while I was waiting for admission into a higher institution. However, because of my recovery process, I had to decline the admission after the results were released. I was not ready for it because the doctor said I had to spend about six months doing nothing.
The following year, I wrote JAMB and applied for Medicine and Surgery as a course because that experience changed my focus and ambition. It became my inspiration and motivation.
I had always been a good science student, and during that period in school, before my operation, I couldn't do any physical labour. The best thing I could do was study my books, so I became good at it.
And now, I am in my second year studying Medicine and Surgery at the University of Lafia, Nasarawa State, Nigeria. I saw what I wanted, and I went for it because I can relate to it.
