La más joven de las capitales - The youngest of the capitals. [ESP - ENG]
I will always remember the Red Village and look upon it with deep affection. There I left stories from every stage of my past life, and even now, though distance has grown between us, nostalgia still rises from those years when I wandered through its streets, its neighborhoods, and its landscapes. Artemisa represents professional growth for me—not in photography, which is what I devote myself to now, but in earlier times, when it welcomed me as an adopted son of that soil red as blood. Little by little, it shaped my education and my first professional steps. It is only natural that I dedicate to it this small fragment of my time and my words.
In the church at the center of the city, I was baptized in secret, at a time when such a thing was almost illegal in Cuba. And don’t imagine it happened in early childhood—I was fully aware of what was going on: my paternal grandparents and my maternal uncles launched themselves into the clandestine adventure of that baptism. A hurried Our Father, a rushed ceremony, and the dimness of the church’s main nave are all I remember. And although much around it has changed—some parts have been beautified, others swallowed by time, neglect, and indifference—the place still preserves its soul, still holds the spirituality that the people of Artemisa have sought since the days of its founding.
On this trip, everything seemed to fall perfectly into place. The flamboyant tree in full bloom, its fiery red colors spilling over the park; the half‑finished bandstand that, synchronized with nature and its palette, offered an incredible atmosphere to anyone who approached; that park overflowing with people immersed in their daily routines—elderly folks doing their morning exercises, long lines of people at the banks trying to get a bit of cash, passersby moving from one side to the other—and at the very center of it all, as if crowning the city, the Church.
It was enough then to simply cross the street to connect with the Boulevard, the cultural and economic epicenter of that city. Of course, it wasn’t always like that. Back then it was just a paved street with a few rustic shops that sold almost nothing and only dressed up from time to time—especially when the Book Fair or some other major event was held. Outside of those occasions, the only thing that made it different was that cars weren’t allowed to pass through. But when the city became the capital fifteen years ago, everything changed.

The whim was to turn it into a marble avenue where the people of Artemisa could have spaces for leisure and enjoyment. More than once it became a meeting place for my old friends and for the students I left behind in the different levels of education where I was shaping myself as a teacher. The whim was to turn it into a marble avenue where the people of Artemisa could have spaces for leisure and enjoyment.
The truth is that the atmosphere changed; it beautified the city in a way it truly deserved. Each side of the street filled with new shops, and the place gained a higher meaning—it became worth visiting, worth wandering through the streets of Artemisa to witness its gradual transformation. The “colonial” buildings, the good coffee they served, the artisans selling their pieces, and so many other details enriched everyday life.
And even though so much has changed, the stories I lived there are still alive. The escuelas al campo, where we faced that red soil and the hard work of the fields; my training as a teacher; my integration into the university as a technical professor in Informatics; the great friends I made in those lands; the affective families I built in its heart; the opportunities the city gave me to grow within its environment—and so many other things I treasure.
