So beautiful and so hidden that when a traveler discovers it, they cannot stop admiring its charms. Here, in Plaza Vieja, we will conclude our journey through the squares of Old Havana, those enchanting places that transport visitors through time to a not-so-distant past shaped by the culture, architecture, and heritage beauty of this Caribbean island. Its spacious layout invites the curious explorer to take in every building that graces its boundaries. It breathes a colonial spirit blended with modernity, a Spanish essence reinterpreted through a distinctly Cuban lens. At times, music drifts across the square, mingling with the aromas of traditional Creole cuisine and the coffee brewed in the cafés that inhabit it. The atmosphere is impossible to replicate; it exists only here and nowhere else.

The square was not always old. There was a time, many years ago, when it was known as Plaza Nueva, a square created to provide the city with a marketplace, a place where the inhabitants of that walled Havana could stock their homes with provisions. I can imagine it bustling with shops, street vendors, and stalls where people displayed their goods, its arcades crowded with men and women moving back and forth in search of what they needed. Then, as the years passed, its original purpose gradually faded. The city continued to grow, and Plaza Nueva became Plaza Vieja. Perhaps there was a period when it was forgotten and neglected, until its splendor was restored and multiplied beyond what it had once been.

Without a doubt, it was and remains one of the cultural epicenters of the city, both of old Havana and of the Havana we know today. It offers spaces such as the Mirador de la Cámara Oscura, a fascinating place for leisure and entertainment that rewards visitors with panoramic views of the city, as well as the Fototeca de Cuba, Café Escorial, the House of the Counts of Jaruco, La Vitrola, the Planetarium, and many other buildings that form a harmonious and graceful ensemble around the square.

Whenever I sit down to look through my travel photographs and arrive at this place, it awakens in me the desire to return, to sit beneath those arcades and enjoy a cold craft beer, listen to the musical groups filling the air with traditional melodies, and leave with the certainty that here, a small piece of a beautiful Cuba and a beautiful Havana still survives.

We will continue walking through and sharing Havana, both the picturesque Havana and the one that is not always so picturesque. People from all over the world travel thousands of miles to see it and experience it, to immerse themselves in its essence, in those unique and irreplaceable things that can only be found in this city. They come to join the human river that flows through its streets, where warmth and kindness are always extended to strangers, making them feel as though they were at home.
