The lakes in Minneapolis are lovely for walking. For safety, they have separate lanes for walkers and cyclists, and they are quite large
— 2-3 miles around. We normally walk around Lake of the Isles, as it is walking distance from my daughter’s apartment. But today we went to the adjoining lake - Bde Maka Ska - which means White Earth Lake in the Dakota Indian language. The name was changed from Lake Calhoun to this name a few years ago.
The lake is still mostly covered in ice, and it was a bizarre deep turquoise color under the ominous gray sky.
Some of the pictures make it look quite gray, and others I have enhanced with a filter to bring up the blue tones, which were more like what we saw.
All around the lake are features and activities. It was cool and there was a wind blowing, but here in Minnesota we are so thrilled when the snow melts that we are out enjoying the warmer weather.

Canoes for when the weather warms for real and all the ice is gone...
There is also a band shell, seasonal snack bar, and decorative items like over-sized Adirondack chairs, as well as an iron art piece with words (I’m assuming) in Dakota.
I’ll share a few more pictures of the lake views, including some ducks enjoying the bit of open water between the shore and the edge of the ice. The two people walking are my husband and daughter. I couldn’t help including Yellow Man in one of my pictures of them.
And finally, a few more modified images, in monochrome, which I think brought out a sinister side to the warning signs about thin ice.
