A Walk Through the Woods: Fungi, Turning Leaves, and the Morning Sun
I went for a walk through a wood not too far from me this morning, not long after we'd had a shower of rain.
By the time I got there the sun was coming through the trees, and the light on the path was lovely.
Some of the leaves were already turning a deep red, which really stood out against all the green around it. Autumn is definitely starting to show itself.
On the path, a single wet leaf was sticking flat to the ground, holding drops of water that looked like tiny glass beads in the light. The weather is typically British at the moment, chilly mornings, followed by sunshine just as you’ve dressed in your winter woollies.
There were quite a few fungi around too. I'm hoping that's a good sign for the rest of the season because there seems to be plenty about already, and quite a variety as well.
Further along the trail, a single white feather caught my eye, resting neatly on top of a dark leaf. It looked fresh and clean, almost as if it had only just landed there.
I'm looking forward to the next few weeks as autumn gets going properly. The woods should start changing quite quickly now, and I'm especially looking forward to the spider webs covered in dew and those misty mornings when everything looks so different.
