Ah my lunch yesterday, Chilli Duck w/ rice.
Pretty tasty.
Although, this cold August, I've been a bit hungrier than normal.
My mind mills over things while I go through my daily grind. It cannot really concentrate on anything clearly and just meanders on a variety of topics.
I'm a passive manager.
I have a general standard that I expect. Apart from that, my team can manage their work how they see fit.
While one person was away, others had to cover her work. It was here that I identified a breaking of one of my pet hates; Hidy Holes.
In administration, we can develop many types of bad habots.
One of these is collecting paperwork in our work zones that should not be there.
It needs to be filed away or dealt with.
Cluttered spaces encrouch on your work environment. It creeps upon you subtely and can bog you down mentally.
We sat together and discussed a number of points, areas for improvenent and all went smoothly.
Another area of administration is prioritising your workload.
There are tasks that are urgent and need to be done in order of importance.
If you have many urgent tasks, of equal importance, then you need to just start.
Alot of times you can over deliberate over which to do - just roll your sleeves up and do it.
After the urgent, comes the general workload.
Be wary, not to fall into the trap, of doing open ended work first and consuming all of your time.
An effective strategy, depending on the workload and time, is to do the items that you know that have a clesr beginning and end.
Then you can spend time on open ended tasks as you can finesse with a report, graph, analysis, investigation without the burden of other tasks waiting.
If you have limited time or alot of work then you must not let people or surroundings distract you.
The nicer or less experienced you are, the more likely it will be that other people will approach you.
You need to be a little bit stern from time to time.
Think.
Sometimes you should ask yourself the question you have, before you ask for help.
Many times the answer is there in front of you.
I find some people just need to think laterally, particularly in administration.
Most tasks involve pretty much a logical process with the added ingredients of corporate culture, terminology and the like.
To do administration you need to care a little.
This makes you vulnerable to insensitive people.
If somebody says something that you don't like then you should say something.
Bullies cower and reasonable people modify their behaviour. Unfortunately, assholes will remain the same, especially, narcissists.
But, they normally need you more than you need them.
Have a question, ask it, but only after you've asked yourself.
#NitPicky
I can nitpick a bit.
My staff protest sometimes when I am too tough but they understand that my standard makes them better.
But sometimes it's tiring.
The appreciation is when my caterpillars become butterflies.
