Kittens in the Park
Caracas is one of those cities where a stroll through the park can turn into a cat-filled experience. Anyone might think that in these natural settings we’d find plenty of birds, perhaps some squirrels, insects, and other kinds of animals. But the reality is that we can also find groups of cats—cats that may not be lucky enough to have a home of their own, but have found in these public spaces a place where they can be free, safe from danger, and showered with the love of visitors passing by.

Gatitos en el Parque
Caracas, una de esas ciudades en donde un paseo por el parque se puede convertir en una experiencia gatuna. Cualquiera pudiera pensar que en estos entornos naturales encontraremos múltiples aves, quizás algunas ardillas, insectos y otro tipo de animales. Pero la realidad es que también podemos encontrar manadas de gatos, los cuales quizás no tienen la fortuna de contar con un hogar propio, pero encontraron en estos espacios públicos un área en donde estar libres, sin peligros y con el amor que les brindan los visitantes que por allí pasan.
In a fleeting glance, I spotted a black kitten that looked like a panther, a Siamese, and others whose colors and coats are truly incredible, but one of the things that caught my attention the most is that they’re all very friendly; they’re 100% curious and possess an innocence that’s utterly endearing. In their little eyes, there is no trace of fear—on the contrary, there is tremendous serenity, a thirst for love, and an affection that overflows on its own.
En una mirada fugaz observé un gatito negro que parecía una pantera, algún siamés y otros cuyos colores y pelajes son realmente increíbles, pero una de las cosas que más me llamó la atención es que todos son muy amigables; un espíritu curioso desarrollaba el 100% y con una inocencia que enamora. En sus ojitos no se observa temor alguno, sino al contrario, una serenidad tremenda, una sed de amor y un cariño que se desborda por sí solo.
Stray cats are a problem that shouldn’t exist, since each of these little friends is a life that should be cherished with care, so that we can provide them with a full and lasting existence—one free from cruelty and overflowing with love. But the reality in our cities is that there are individuals of all breeds who are marginalized by society, and this is how our way of life has forced them to make the streets their home—which means learning to fend for themselves, finding food however they can, and trying to live one day at a time.
Los gatos en situación de calle son una situación que no debería existir, ya que cada uno de estos amiguitos es una vida que debería ser cuidada con recelo, para esta forma poderles brindar una existencia plena y duradera, en donde la maldad no exista y en donde el amor se desborde. Pero la realidad de nuestras ciudades es que existen individuos de todas las razas que son marginados por la sociedad y es así como nuestro estilo de vida los ha empujado a hacer de la calle su hogar y esto implica aprender a defenderse, alimentarse como se pueda y tratar de vivir un día a la vez.
This is an undeniable reality, and I hope that my reflection today goes beyond just a few pretty pictures; I hope that each of us, when we have the opportunity, will give a little love to those who lack everything. At the same time, it’s important to learn that even in the harshest circumstances, we must always keep moving forward—fighting for life, trying to help others, and doing our small part to build a more just and balanced society.
Esta es una realidad innegable y espero que mi reflexión de hoy sirva para ir más allá de unas fotografías bonitas; espero que cada uno de nosotros, cuando tengamos la oportunidad, regalemos un poquito de amor a esos seres que están carentes de todo, pero al mismo tiempo es importante aprender que incluso en las circunstancias más duras siempre toca seguir adelante, luchando por la vida, tratando de ayudar al prójimo y dejando un granito de arena en la construcción de una sociedad más justa y equilibrada.
