En las frías e inhóspitas aguas del Estrecho de Magallanes yacen numerosos barcos y una enorme cantidad de sueños frustrados, sin duda alguna este paso marítimo constituye uno de los más arriesgados y difíciles del planeta, pero al mismo tiempo cruzarlo significa valentía, heroísmo y fortaleza, es por esta razón que embarcarse en un viaje con destino al sur era una de las aventuras más grandes y gloriosas que se pudieran realizar.

Crossing the Sea
In the cold and inhospitable waters of the Strait of Magellan lie numerous ships and an enormous amount of frustrated dreams, without a doubt this maritime passage is one of the most risky and difficult on the planet, but at the same time crossing it means bravery, heroism and strength, it is for this reason that embarking on a voyage to the south was one of the greatest and most glorious adventures that could be made.
Yo con un espíritu joven, un corazón deseoso de enfrentar nuevas aventuras y con las ganas de conocer nuevos puertos, decidí abordar un viejo navío cuyo nombre era Queen Mary, el cual partió del puerto de Liverpool y su destino era dejar provisiones en Tristán de Acuña, para luego embarcarse hacia el sur, cruzar el estrecho de Magallanes y luego ascender hasta llegar a las Islas Cook. Este era un barco netamente mercante, famoso por haber recorrido todos los mares del mundo y por haber cruzado el peligroso estrecho en más de una docena de oportunidades, por esta razón en medio de sus velas blancas íbamos a encontrar dos estrellas azules, las cuales eran motivo de orgullo para toda la tripulación, conseguir un puesto de trabajo allí y no era fácil, pero el destino me puse en el lugar y momento indicado, ya que una noche de abril mientras me encontraba tomando unas copas en el bar el capitán del banco entraría en búsqueda de personal, a lo cual yo no dude en postularme y gracias a mis habilidades, mi edad y un cuerpo bien definido fui el primero en ser aceptado.
With a young spirit, a heart eager to face new adventures and the desire to know new ports, I decided to board an old ship whose name was Queen Mary, which left the port of Liverpool and its destination was to leave provisions in Tristan de Acuna, then embark south, cross the Strait of Magellan and then ascend to reach the Cook Islands. This was a purely merchant ship, famous for having traveled all the seas of the world and for having crossed the dangerous strait more than a dozen times, for this reason in the middle of its white sails we were going to find two blue stars, which were a source of pride for the whole crew, Getting a job there was not easy, but fate put me in the right place at the right time, because one night in April while I was having a few drinks in the bar the captain of the bank would enter in search of staff, to which I did not hesitate to apply and thanks to my skills, my age and a well-defined body I was the first to be accepted.
Mi trabajo a bordo del navío era sencillo, debías cuidar de las aves de corral que allí se transportaban, las cuales servirían para alimentar a la tripulación durante los meses de recorrido, por lo tanto, se podrán imaginar que se trataba de una enorme cantidad de gallinas y pollos, los cuales deberían mantenerse en buen estado y perfectamente sanos, a decir verdad no era algo que me gustara mucho, pero las ganas de descubrir aquel místico lugar me hizo aceptar casi cualquier cosa.
My job aboard the ship was simple, you had to take care of the poultry that were transported there, which would serve to feed the crew during the months of travel, therefore, you can imagine that it was a huge amount of hens and chickens, which should be kept in good condition and perfectly healthy, to tell the truth it was not something that I liked very much, but the desire to discover that mystical place made me accept almost anything.
Pasaron los días y las semanas, en el mar todo parece ser igual y la monotonía suele afectar a nuestra mente y nuestro cuerpo, después de muchas jornadas de trabajo la temperatura comenzaba a cambiar, el mar se veía más profundo, más azul, mucho más frío, después de dejar atrás aquella lúgubre isla de Tristán de Acuña, el sol parecía no querer brillar, mientras que el barco constantemente se sacudía sobre unas aguas indomables, cuya energía inagotable.
Days and weeks went by, in the sea everything seems to be the same and monotony usually affects our mind and body, after many days of work the temperature began to change, the sea looked deeper, bluer, much colder, after leaving behind that dreary island of Tristan de Acuna, the sun seemed not to want to shine, while the ship constantly shook on untamed waters, whose inexhaustible energy.
Mientras yo me dedicaba a cuidar de las aves que quedaban, los demás tenían su responsabilidad a bordo del navío, algunos hacían reparaciones, otros la limpieza y el capitán al frente del gran timón en la parte más alta de la cubierta luchaba contra la naturaleza y todo lo que se opusiera para esta forma mantener el curso de nuestro destino.
While I dedicated myself to take care of the remaining birds, the others had their responsibilities on board the ship, some were doing repairs, others were cleaning and the captain at the helm of the big rudder on the highest part of the deck was fighting against nature and everything that opposed to maintain the course of our destiny.
Un gran sobresalto me despertaría en una gélida mañana, cuando observé a mi alrededor todos mis compañeros de la tripulación estaban alertas, alguno yacían en el piso tratando de recomponerse, mientras que otros corrían velozmente puestos de trabajo, de pronto el Tin ton Tin ton de la campana retumbaría por toda la nave, la cual se sacudiría de un lado a otro incesantemente, a pesar de que mi lugar era bajo cubierta yo decidí correr hasta la proa, pero al llegar hasta la mitad mis pies se congelaron por la imagen que estaba viendo mis ojos, se trataba de olas enormes que chocaban contra el navío y llenaban todo de agua, mientras que en un acto reflejo el barco ascendía y caía en picada como si estuviera enfrentando a enormes paredes móviles.

Allí supe que la situación estaba realmente complicada, el humo comenzaba a salir por todas las hendijas del piso mientras que la nave seguía enfrentando cada ola con valentía, pero creo que era más por la acción de la inercia que por el control del timón, yo en realidad no podía hacer nada cada vez que intentaba pararme me resbalaba y caía metros y metros sobre una cubierta que estaba mi papá de agua y la cual parecía estarse desmembrando, así que como pude me sujeté lo más fuerte posible de un barril, cerré mis ojos y sentí un crujido enorme, el cual vendría acompañado de mucha agua helada, como pude traté de flotar y dejarme llevar por la bravura del mar, no sé cuánto tiempo pasó, no sé cómo no me congele, pero de un momento a otro una ola me impulsaría directamente contra un piso empedrado, al abrir Mis ojos me di cuenta de que estaba en la costa, pero con un cuerpo sin fuerza y un alma sin voluntad solo cierra los ojos esperando el triste final.

Pero el destino me jugaría una carta inesperada, resulta que de aquel naufragio llegaron a la costa cientos de objetos y mucho desperdicio, pero lo que llamó la atención de los fundadores de la pequeña ciudad de Punta Arenas fue el descubrir más de 50 cuerpos rostizados de pollos y gallinas, los cuales estaban desperdigados por la costa en una línea de más de 15 kilómetros la cual finalizaba justo al lado de mí, fue de esta forma como los pollos que tanto había cuidado por meses me ayudaron a ser descubierto y, por lo tanto, a seguir viviendo. Tal vez no logré cruzar con éxito la totalidad del estrecho, pero sin duda alguna obtuve la aventura y la experiencia más importante de toda mi vida, no sé si algún día regrese aquellas aguas, pero de lo que sí estoy seguro es que pronto me volveré a lanzar al mar para continuar en la búsqueda de nuevas aventuras y nuevas tierras que descubrir.
