TITULO INGLES.jpg

It has always struck me why some businesses manage to resize and others remain the same, as in the case of neighborhood bodegas. Most of them remain almost the same, as if they were suspended in time.

In the area where I live there are several that could be emblematic, one of them is very close to my house. That winery must be more than forty years old. For a long time it was the only one that existed, it was an obligatory reference for the whole community; and nowadays it is managed by one of the founder's daughters. This winery has been in existence for two generations.

These days, while I was making a purchase, I took the opportunity to talk to the person in charge to clarify my concerns.

The first thing I asked her was if her mother, who was in charge of the business until her last days, had been satisfied with the winery. She replied that she had. In family conversations his mother always told them that it was a blessing to have the winery. Thanks to the income it generated, they could fix the house, eat, dress and educate themselves.

As my interest was mainly on the side of expectations, I asked him if at any time his mother thought about going further, having a bigger business, diversifying it with other products, moving to another place, or opening another winery in another sector to be managed by one of her children.

His answer was very quick and sincere, he told me that no, that his mother never talked to them about transforming that business, neither to expand it nor to incorporate new rubles. For her, what they had was fine and as long as the winery was able to support them, there was no need to be inventing.

At that point of the conversation I dared to go to something more direct, more compromising, more personal, I asked her if she had ever thought of transforming all that. Her answer was a question I did not expect...what for...?

Well..., I told her, maybe with a bigger business you could have more income, live more comfortably, develop other projects such as a more comfortable house, a car... What do I know... .... So many things you could do if the business would generate more income...

Well, no," she said without the slightest hint of doubt. I have never thought about all those possibilities you mentioned. So far things have been going well, with what my sisters and I earn here we can educate our children, we are in the same neighborhood we have lived in all our lives. I don't understand why I would have to risk all this. No, no. I don't have the slightest desire to start inventing...And silence put an end to her answer.

I said goodbye to her, thanked her for the time of the conversation and told her that her words had been very useful to me.

On the way home I kept thinking about what we had talked about. In the different books I have read about the world of entrepreneurship, there is a lot of insistence on going for more. It seems that a basic condition in the entrepreneurial mentality is not to stay calm, not to be satisfied with what you have. There is a lot of talk about finding the motivation to advance to the next step?

However, these expectations are not present in the mindset of these winery owners. I am not going to be so quick to qualify what kind of mentality they may have, let's just say they are entrepreneurs in their own way. And that's fine... There is no one way of being or doing things.

All this got me thinking about one of the key questions that explain our motivations: Do I really want to do it...?

Before embarking on any project, whatever it may be, it would be very healthy to sincerely ask ourselves this question. If the answer is inconclusive, if there is any hint of doubt in it, it is likely that we will not succeed.

Human beings act driven by our beliefs, and the first trigger to channel our energies towards the achievement of a goal is the desire to want to do something.

Thank you for your time.
