TITULO INGLES.jpg

Malina incessantly turns the ring on her middle finger, an involuntary movement she resorts to from time to time in search of concentration. Everything was going well until a date caught her eye in the long pile of uncorrected exams on her desk. That day-month combination took her back thirty years, when she was just a young girl with aspirations of starting college.

Those were happy times for Malina. At that time most of her days were spent with Antonije, her favorite neighbor, and the two of them had grown accustomed to being together. At the age of four Antonije came with his parents to the same suburb where Malina lived. From the moment they met they liked each other, they were practically the same age. . When they were younger, anyone would have thought they were siblings because of the affectionate way they treated each other, but now, in their late teens, hormones had done their job, and Malina and Antonije were talking more and more about moving in together, getting married, having children... The usual things for two young people in love.

When Antonije's family arrived in the neighborhood, some neighbors greeted them with suspicion. The newcomers came with other religious traditions, and it was unusual for them to combine certain differences. However, the daily coexistence and the passage of time diluted that mistrust and nobody cared what anyone did, all the families shared in harmony.

But in the mid-nineties things began to change, old separatist wounds festered again, rarefying the air with the scent of violence. Suddenly the old arguments about who had or had not been the owner of those territories, about who had the right and who had not, about who had been the victim and who had been the aggressor, suddenly returned. Ancestral hatreds were revived and the fire of violence threatened to devastate life.

The separatist leaders used everything they could to exacerbate the enmity. And they found in religious differences a great vein to exploit. Neighbors who had lived together without problems began to make bad faces. The unrest escalated until one day there was no remedy, they were involved in one of those hateful wars where brothers confront brothers.

For Malina and Antonije the situation was dramatic. The neighbors in the suburb kicked the boy's family out of their house. When the tables were turned, the revenge came. Antonije in command of a squad of militiamen retook control of the suburb in the midst of a fierce carnage, where there were practically no survivors...

Malina and a sister managed to reach the woods and flee to a neighboring country that took them in, all other members of her family perished in the war. Antonije was never heard from again.

In their new destination Malina and her sister were taken in by a humanitarian aid organization. During the day Malina did volunteer work at the NGO where she also lived. In the evenings she began her university studies, choosing a career in education because she felt that from the classroom she could do something to prevent another tragedy like the one she had lived through.

As time went by, Malina became a prominent university professor and combined her teaching with a growing activity as a lecturer in peace organizations...

Two more turns of the ring and Malina is back in the present time again, concentrating because at any moment Mirna, her assistant, will come with the driver to take her to a new conference...

Malina is currently spreading a new approach to the subject: building peace from personal change. Malina is convinced that each of us has much to contribute to build sustainable peace.

She bases her proposal on two pillars: one is to find peace within oneself, because we cannot give what we do not have; if we can savor inner peace, we can do more to spread it. The other pillar has to do with a change in convictions: if we do not accompany the fighters, there will be no one to fight against, if we refuse to participate in the war, the war cannot be fought. Malina knows that these changes can take a long time because people do not change from one day to the next. But she also knows that every action has a beginning and she has decided to start...

Teacher we are ready, announces Mirna...Ready Mirna, I'm coming, tonight I'm sure that many hearts will change...

Thank you for your time.
