English Version

Last night I wasn’t expecting much from Christmas Eve. I had already explained it in my previous post: I didn’t have big plans or too many expectations. But life, when you least expect it, brings small surprises that can change everything.

My boyfriend arrived home with a bottle of wine in his hand. It was from my favorite local brand, Marpe, but this time it wasn’t the usual one I know, it was a reserve vermouth. I had never tried it before, so my curiosity was immediate. With the wine already on the table, I thought a night like that deserved something special to go with it.

Then I remembered that we had recently bought a new air fryer. I hadn’t had the chance to use it yet, and it felt like the perfect moment to give it a try. I must confess I was very nervous. I had never owned one of those before and I was afraid of ruining everything. Still, I took a deep breath, looked up some instructions online, and seasoned the chicken in the simplest way: salt, pepper, and garlic.

The result was spectacular. I still surprise myself thinking about it. The chicken came out golden, juicy, and full of flavor, and it cooked incredibly fast. To complete the meal, I also made ripe plantains in the air fryer, which turned out perfect.

The wine was delicious. The aroma, the flavor, everything about it… it immediately became one of my favorites, even more than the raisin wine I like so much. The combination of the chicken and the vermouth couldn’t have been better. Of course, I know the perfect pairing would be cheese, but when you don’t have all the resources, improvising is also part of the magic.

In the end, it was a simple, unexpected, and happy Christmas Eve, although also a short one. At 9:00 pm the electricity went out, and everything was left in silence and darkness. Cubans know very well that here happiness is almost never complete. There is always something missing, something that interrupts it, something that forces us to adapt. Even so, between a glass of wine, a well-cooked chicken, and good company, Christmas Eve was worth it. Because while the light lasted, so did the joy.
