Ever since that last memory, Wez had stopped playing the piano and devoted himself to his usual chores at the stable—tending to the animals and feeding them—though his mind was always filled with thoughts of Elaris. Every time he went to bed, he remembered the immense stone door, the desperate voice calling for help from the other side, and the strange warning that said “Don’t let him get there first; don’t let the door be opened.” He still had that silver key, too; every time he looked at it, Elaris’s name would shine, as if it were still signaling something—just as every object he came across seemed to be a piece of a puzzle he still couldn’t quite understand.
Wez was still afraid, and that fear began to overcome his curiosity, so he didn’t hear another note. However, the more he tried to distance himself from that melody, the more vivid the memories became; he began to see those strange symbols on the walls and hear a piano in the distance, as if it were calling to him.
One afternoon, he returned to the barn; everything seemed quiet, and in the back was the old piano where he had left it weeks earlier. Wez couldn’t resist and sat down at the instrument; his hands immediately began to tremble, his heart was pounding, and the sheet music was almost blank, with only three lines still written on it. So Wez realized that time was running out, and if he kept waiting, he might never discover what Elaris was.
He placed the key on the piano, rested his fingers on the keys, and began to play the third-to-last line. This time the melody was different—much slower, deeper, and conveying a strange sense of farewell—but once again it happened, and everything began to fade away. When he opened his eyes, he realized he was in a plaza built entirely of white stone, where hundreds of statues of musicians stood, holding instruments pointed toward the sky. Everything was strange, yet perfectly flawless.
He walked across the square and realized he had arrived in Elaris. He also examined each statue and noticed they had a short description—not people’s names, but titles of melodies—as if the entire city had been built to protect music. In the distance, he heard a piano playing the same melody Wez had played, so he decided to follow the sound and found an old man sitting in front of an ancient stone piano. The man kept playing, and when he finished the last note, he said, “You’ve gone farther than anyone before you.”
Wez seized the moment to ask, “What is Elaris?” “The answer lies behind that door,” the old man replied immediately. “And that key you hold can open it—but it can also unleash what was sealed away centuries ago.” Wez still didn’t understand, and just then the old man added, “It’s getting closer.” At that very moment, the plaza began to crack, and the musical notes engraved on the stone vanished as if they had never existed.
Wez wanted to run, but the memory ended, and he looked once more at the score—the third-to-last line had just vanished, leaving only two lines remaining. That memory was not a good one, and he knew that the next memory would be even more dangerous and that the shadow was also advancing toward Elaris’s door. Wez realized that he wasn’t just trying to uncover an ancient mystery—he was in a race against time, and if he arrived too late, the secret that had remained hidden for centuries could change everything forever.
