WIFREDO LAM
In this first part I will talk about the artist Wifredo Lam (1902-1982), one of the most recognized Cuban artists in the world. His work is characterized by the fusion of Afro-Cuban elements with surrealism and cubism, creating a unique style that reflects the rich cultural heritage of the island. Lam studied at the San Alejandro Academy in Havana and later in Madrid met the renowned Pablo Picasso in a traveling exhibition and again became close art friends.
Lam's most famous work, "The Jungle" (1943), is a testament to his ability to combine European influences with Cuban iconography, creating a powerful and evocative visual narrative. His work achieves international breadth, with publications in prestigious magazines such as VVV, Instead, ArtNews and View, as well as exhibitions in the United States, Haiti, Cuba, France, Sweden, England, Mexico, Moscow and Prague. He is considered one of the most outstanding figures in the plastic arts and his works are permanently exhibited in the national museum.

Hurricane, 1945 Oil and charcoal on canvas: 218.5 x 198 cm
Of all Lam's samples, the one that impresses me the most is this large format painting, painted on jute, as I am a big fan of its color combination and contrast. It is impressive for its ability to concentrate all the mystery of creation in a moment of apparent calm, when all the animistic forces are in maximum tension because of its name "Hurricane".
El tercer mundo, 1965 - 1966
Óleo sobre tela: 132 x 102 cm
Note: I always take one or two photos of the exhibition hall, so that you can see how the paintings, the tourists and the decoration of the place look, all very colorful, well lit and well cared for by the staff. The guards who take care of it are always attentive to any movement, if they enter with food, they are called to attention and it is forbidden to touch the works.
The Chair, 1947 Oil on canvas: 131 x 97.5 cm
This painting is the most recognized in my country of the outstanding Lam, it is rich in impasto and textures, it is a paradigm of the refunctionalization of traditional genres of western painting such as still life and landscape. It stands out in the room in front of the work, the decoration painted by our artist Manuel Mendive with his chair decorated in religious practices of African roots.
