Hello community ! Today I have the pleasure to invite you to the personal exhibition "Functionally Dysfunctional", at Galiano Gallery, inaugurated this May by the artist Alberto Dominguez, which I had the pleasure to visit and meet in a tour of the capital in search of business.
The Expo brings together nearly 20 works by the young artist that deconstruct, show and superimpose diverse notions of reality, according to the imaginary of the creator, the individual experience or subjective perceptions of the environment. It lies in the effectiveness in redirecting a procedure, amplify it and permeate it with parallel senses.
To this end, the master uses communicative resources typical of furniture design that, reconfigured under the logics of the artistic medium, give rise to ambiguous creations, anarchic in their aesthetic-formal pre-definition and, nevertheless, coherent in their construction as symbols and objects of estrangement, according to their promoters.
This exhibition encourages participation in a critical reflection on the nature of art, its function and value in the contemporary context. Viewers were asked questions about the utility and identity of art through their works. The following is an example of a chair that could not be used to sit on at the Expo, a piece developed with metal and wood.
The following samples show artistic paintings on canvas from the series "Desmontaje de mueble No. 7" that demonstrate a battlefield where the concepts of decomposition and reconstruction come to life. This meticulously executed work measures 60 x 60 cm and offers a window to reflect on the essence of furniture and its potential transformation into something beyond the utilitarian.
The insertion of works in public spaces transcends the simple exhibition; it becomes an act of direct communication with the community, a dialogue without barriers that continually challenges and redefines the shared space.
El Mueble no.5 expresses another type of chair, but one that is more sociable in the face of society.
As a whole he manages to make the works in the exhibition act as a mirror that reflects our own contradictions and complexities. The young visual artist (he goes beyond sculpture, with paintings, photographs and even NFTs) forces us to confront the idea that what is useful can also be profound.
The chromatic selection is not random; it is a deliberate aesthetic choice that underlines emotions, contrasts and, more subtly, the ephemeral or permanent character of the objects represented. The last expression are modulations of furniture no.6 that measure 30x30 cm and are drawings in cardboard, acrylic and nickel steel.
In a world saturated with objects designed to fulfill specific functions, this exhibition reminds us of the power of art to expand our perceptions and enrich our experience of the world. Do we dare to look beyond the surface and discover the hidden meanings that these objects may hold?
The Gallery can be found at Galiano no. 256 e/ Neptuno y Concordia, Centro Habana, Havana, Cuba 🇨🇺 .
