Visiting La Candonga: The Informal Market Next to the University Hospital of Villa Clara, Cuba. [ENG] [ESP]
Hello travelers of the @worldmappin community!
Today I have the pleasure of inviting you to tour and walk through the streets of the city of Santa Clara. You will get to know an informal area of private vendors (self-employed workers) who set up near the hospital center, as well as the natural environment that accompanies the everyday Villaclareño. I will also present to you, through images, the "Arnaldo Milián Castro" Provincial Clinical Surgical University Hospital, in the double-road area, with its different avenues, buildings, people, bridges, and everyday spaces.
I hope you like the photographs and enjoy each of these urban designs and stories. Join me on this wonderful tour!
¡Hola viajeros de la comunidad
@worldmappin!
This trip was unexpected, because we were actually heading to Cienfuegos, to the Salto de Hanabanilla, to take a vacation and rest from work. The first images are at the Taguasco stop, located in Sancti Spíritus. Here we only got off to use the bathroom and eat light food or, simply, a morning coffee.
As you can see, the sun was rising and there were still few people on the streets; only national cargo vehicles could be seen.
We arrived at La Candonga, known as such for its product sales, small businesses, and the buying and selling initiative of its inhabitants. It was a place where we only stayed for about an hour, since the guide had to go to the Travel Agency to secure the stay for the hotel and settle the accounts.
A few blocks from where the bus dropped us off to walk and explore, the "José Luis Miranda" University Pediatric Hospital was located, with its specialized emergency services for minors under 18 with clinical and surgical conditions.
To move on to the sales points, we had to cross a bridge that is part of the urban drainage system of the Cubanicay River, in Santa Clara, currently quite dry and polluted with garbage.
I don't think there are even any fish, but at least it still has some water. Our temporary visit allowed us to explore an environment full of contrasts: streets open to traffic, vegetation areas, and buildings that are part of the urban landscape.
Each image of this bridge captures a fragment of that Cuban reality and, together, they invite us to look beyond the obvious.
Among some of the products being sold was turmeric, excellent for health; but there were some small pieces of wood that I never knew what they were —she said for charcoal— but I didn't understand hahaha, nor the 100-peso bottles. This route constitutes the setting where the daily activities of those who live, work, or pass through this area take place.
I'll tell you that La Candonga is huge in small sales spaces, all stuck one next to the other. I barely had time to take out my phone to take photos, since I wasn't in my city and I didn't want to go through a bad moment of theft or have someone feel uncomfortable about being filmed.
Behind every counter there is effort, creativity and, many times, a family that depends on their economic activity. There were several coffee shops; there were also cleaning products, medicines, clothing, footwear, household goods, hardware, technology and other services.
Leaving La Candonga, just 30 minutes into continuing the trip toward Hanabanilla, I went to observe the "Arnaldo Milián Castro" Provincial Clinical Surgical University Hospital, a center that has the intensive care unit, radiology and the clinical laboratory, to which ten assistance services have been added for the citizens of the central territory of the island.
Its green tone reminds us that the city is not built solely around commerce and public spaces, but also depends on institutions that offer essential services and attend to the needs of the population.
I went inside the hospital to the bathroom; it was quite clean and organized. These street sales points also help a lot to buy necessary meals for a sick family member or, simply, for the doctors themselves during their lunch or meal times; there they find everything.
This visit allows us to observe different faces of urban life: those who sell, those who buy, those who move through the streets and those who dedicate their day to caring for others.
The image of the building, together with the ambulance and the health personnel, adds another dimension to the tour: that of the workers who perform essential functions for the community.
Many helped save thousands of lives during COVID-19, which was catastrophic for Cuba and the world. This pause in the trip shows the value of documenting fragments of reality, with its contrasts, its colors and its particularities.

To conclude, La Candonga in Santa Clara is much more than a point on the map. It is a space where needs, commercial initiatives, human relationships and scenes that are part of today's Cuba intersect.
Spending an hour walking through it allowed me to get closer to a complex reality, in which economic difficulties, popular ingenuity and the will to keep moving forward coexist.
