When my parents were here visiting us last month, we siblings brought them to dine in a mall due to raining cats and dog. We were really clueless where to eat and was just walking around until my dad saw this restaurant which was not too crowded. It was a 'multi-racial restaurant' in a mall — called Ali, Muthu, Ah Hock!
Ali, Muthu & Ah Hock
The first one was opened in the year 2013, with itd main purpose to create a place where people from different races and religion could gather for a meal while chitchatting. Its slogan is 'Biarlah real!' meaning 'Let's be real'. Since then, it bloomed like mushrooms and there are many branches now all across Klang Valley.
We reached the restaurant and only 3 tables were occupied mainly because it was weekday. It can be crowded during weekends. We managed to get a long table for our big family of 13 people.
Ambience
We loved the ambience here, spacious and it had two section, one is the inside section and another at the outside more towards open-concept where you will be able to see all the shops and passer-bys at the mall. We were at the open-concept area.
I love the special ceiling at one section with the big logo and picture of Ali, Muthu, Ah Hock. I think the artist drew them well. Ali stands for Malay races, Muthu stands for Indian races and Ah Hock for the Chinese. Brilliant! They also have their own 'Ali, Muthu & Ah Hock' instant white coffee.
Food we ordered
They are famous for their 'nasi lemak', nyonya laksa and chicken chop. So happened a few of us did order these dishes.
Nasi Lemak Ayam
'Nasi Lemak' is our most sought after Malaysia local food, can be eaten for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The rice is cooked with coconut milk making it super fragrant, and it comes with roasted peanuts, cucumber slices and hard-boiled egg. Ayam = chicken. The fried chicken was delicious, crispy on the outside, soft and fresh chicken meat on the inside, and the marinated with spices and herbs making it super appetizing.
Nyonya Laksa
This is a dish originated by the Nyonyas in our country, curry-based soup noodle, also with coconut milk added in, usually garnished with julienned cucumbers, tofu puffs, chicken meat, and hard-boiled egg. However, my youngest brother said the nyonya laksa soup here was not as flavourful as the one he tried at another branch. So, oh well, different branches, different standard.
Chicken chop
The Hainanese Chicken Chop was really huge in portion that we got shocked. Like almost two slices of huge chicken chop? Deep fried and ladled with generous amount of sweet sour sauce with mixed vegetables. We all took a bite of it since it was so huge portion, it became a shared meal together. Most of us think the chicken chop was delicious but the sauce was way too sweet.
Mee Rebus
This is another favourite Malaysians' dish. It is noodle dish served with soup based made of peanut and sweet potatoes, giving it that natural sweet and nutty taste. Usually garnished with fried fritters, fried tofu and hard-boiled egg. I ordered this and sadly, the whole noodle dish was so dry, I wanted to ask for more soup but I didn't. The portion of noodle and ingredients were too much in such a small bowl, so the soup like not enough. Anyway, taste wise, it was commendable. The portion was huge that I shared with my parents.
Kuey Teow Soup
My eldest son was recovering from stomach flu so he wanted something really clear soup. The only option was 'kuey teow' soup, a flat rice noodle with delicious prawn chicken broth soup. It had generous amount of chicken slices and a few fresh prawns. He said it was yummy.
Roti Jala
My parents said they were not hungry at all so they ordered this small dish aka anak to be shared. Jala means net. Because the batter made of flour and turmeric would be cooked/shaped using a tool to make the whole pancake in a netting shaped. Usually served with a bowl of curry chicken for dipping. My parents also said this dish was delicious.
Kantonis noodle
My brother side of family ordered this dish — Kantonie noodle, made of fried yee mee and ladled with generous amount of flavourful savory egg broth, with vegetables and chicken slices. Really very appetising and suitable for people who loves Chinese food.
Chee Cheong Fun
The chee cheong fun aka steamed rice rolls here looked like the one from Penang where my father's hometown was. He saw it and ordered for everyone to share. It came with the shrimp paste type of sauce, unlike KL one with the bean sauce and curry sauce. Very delicious although to some, the sauce was too sweet too.
We enjoyed our time together, considering my parents only come twice a year, and air flight tickets no longer cheap too. We savour the moments together. Will be come back here again? Yes, but most of us will share our food. Most of the food came in large amount and we barely could finish all of them. We tried our best so we ended up feeling really full and sleepy. Haha!
