I went to buy a bike with my girlfriend. I cycled, she took transit. The bike was for her. She tried it and liked it. I found the rear break didn't engage easily and also the front brake worked well but slowed the wheel down even when not pressing the brakes. It wasn't a major slowing of the bike so we bought it. Hopefully it will be safe enough for my girlfriend. Even though it was raining she enjoyed most of the cycle home until she got too cold on a steep uphill. Her friend who had a bike now has some damage on it so they can't cycle together until it gets fixed. But hopefully they will be able to on her days off when I'm in work. My gf doesn't exercise much so cycling should help improve her mood and overall well-being.
