English

The Chinchorro

"Put it in the slot!"

That was the phrase she uttered, and he, like an obedient boy, stripped off everything and went right after her.

Then she backed away and yelled:

"No way, not like that! That's just vulgar."

"Damn it, girl, yes. I love you, and you just do whatever you want with me."

That was what was overheard from the old llanerito as he talked to the city girl, thirty years his junior.

When I witnessed that scene, I finally understood the message of the Venezuelan singer-songwriter when he wrote the tune "Caballo Viejo."

That older man was deeply in love with the girl. But it wasn't an unrequited feeling; it was mutual. The problem was that the llanerito hadn't smelled flowers in a long time, let alone tasted fruit, so he was desperate and couldn't always control his impulses.

The girl, for her part, was also in love, or at least felt a strong attraction to the old man. She tolerated certain mischief from him and responded with winks and teasing glances, but she was the one who set the boundaries. She knew that if she didn't, everything would be reduced to a quick, clumsy moment and nothing more. And what they both wanted was the same thing almost all of us look for: to be with the person we like for as long as possible.

The llanerito knew time wasn't on his side, which is why he was always in a rush. However, he was no fool. He knew when to stop whenever the girl put up the "stop" sign. He didn't want to lose that creature who, against all odds, had actually paid attention to him.

In town, everyone talked about that madness. The Llanerito’s contemporaries would laugh and tell him:

"Enjoy it, my boy, enjoy it."

On the other hand, many ladies labeled him a dirty old man and the girl a shameless hussy.

That story didn't have enough material to become a feature film. The girl was just visiting, and this would inevitably come to an end. The Llanerito knew it. She did too.

That's why, on a hot night deep in the plains, with the moon planted at the highest point of the sky, under two palm trees and on a colorful chinchorro, the forbidden fruit was finally delivered. Both felt they were living in paradise on earth.

Who said doing it in a chinchorro was uncomfortable?

Well... unless you do it standing up.

They were happy for a little while. Afterward, everything went back to normal. Either way, the order to "Put it in the slot" was carried out and remained part of the town's folklore.

And before anyone's imagination runs wilder than it should, I must clarify something: the famous slot belonged to an old slot machine. The girl had been trying for a while to explain to the Llanerito where to insert the coin to start the game.

The rest was manufactured by those who overheard the conversation halfway.

And that’s it for my five minutes at the end of a Sunday afternoon.
